Just some context for this article's creation: in short, this is a WP:SPLIT from Moorish architecture.

The initial content here was written for a section in Moorish architecture a while ago, because at the time I wanted to create an overview of relevant military architecture in the region, including al-Andalus (which is historically related), but couldn't think of a better place for it. Now that Moorish architecture has gotten very long, that section on military architecture was disproportionately long compared to others and thus made a good candidate for spinning off. Hence this article and its related counterpart, Fortifications of al-Andalus. (Arguably, both of these could remain together in one article, but the resulting scope and possible titles just felt really awkward.) Because of the shared history and geography in the region, particularly from the Almohad period onwards, there are enough commonalities from historical Morocco to Tunisia (and Tripolitania) to make this topic useful, I believe.

Going forward, this article still needs some improvements and some expansion. Its scope could be adjusted if needed. Suggestions are welcome. In particular, there isn't much yet on the Ottoman-era fortifications of Tunisia and Algeria, which are major and interesting topics. In the meantime, I've included a particularly lengthy "Further reading" section whose purpose is also to provide references that could be used to expand the article, including in that direction.
