Does anyone have information about the origins of this program? When and on which flavor of *IX was it first written, who wrote it, etc?

  • It seems to come from BSD. My manpage says: BSD April 19, 1994 BSD

It's much older: http://minnie.tuhs.org/UnixTree/V7/usr/src/games/ - No credits, no manpage but V6 didn't have it so i'd think it's safe to assume that it was first written for V7. --FelixNawothnig 01:47, 8 February 2006 (UTC)Reply

Capital letters in fortunes

edit

Does anyone know what it means when certain words of a fortune are written in all caps? I can't find information about that anywhere.

Thanks

I don't know. Maybe it's to add emphasis? Stale Fries 18:29, 14 November 2006 (UTC)Reply

You are thinking of the "zippy" fortune library (my personal favorite). Here's an example, "Four thousand different MAGNATES, MOGULS & NABOBS are romping in my gothic solarium!!" They are capitalized for emphasis and not part of a mad-lib type scheme. They may have something to do with Zippy the pinhead but I have no idea because I am not familiar with the comic strip. Thanks for clarifying that, but I'm a little disappointed... Thought it was some kind of riddle... 84.58.172.185 19:01, 27 July 2007 (UTC)Reply

how about some links to fortune library repositories? —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 199.90.15.3 (talk) 16:32, 14 March 2007 (UTC).Reply

Ditto the request for external links; the article is a little skimpy, at least for Unix newbies.

Why does the quote have [sic] in it? I don't see any errors. Bugefun (talk) 16:14, 2 November 2012 (UTC)Reply
