Pronoun they/their

edit

I suggest to reevaluate the usage of they/their. Setting aside there is not a clear consensus on using they/their pronouns even among native English speakers, English wiki is used by lots of non native speakers, whose English is on various level, who may not be aware of such novelty and to whom this may be very confusing. Encyclopedia should be as clear as possible and not a place for agendas. I'm a trans person and my English is pretty good, yet I was confused because I was not expecting it and I took they in its primary (plural) meaning. Had this been an article in a trans section or about a person from 21st century I would have realized right away, but I didn't expect this in an article about an abbot from 17th century. It is confusing and in my opinion pretentious. If you insist on it at least put some sort explanation into the article. Think about millions of high school kids all over the world who use wiki for studying and who would question their knowledge of basic English grammar rules. 77.240.103.204 (talk) 13:30, 19 May 2020 (UTC)Reply

Not Done. Pronouns are a difficult thing to nail in an encyclopedic fashion, particularly looking backwards to a period when alternative pronouns were not permissible in police society and records. It would be anachronistic to apply them in a fashion we lack evidence for. As such, they/them pronouns in this article will be removed until reliable sources suggest a non-anachronistic usage of such pronouns. ~ Pbritti (talk) 07:50, 2 February 2022 (UTC)Reply
