Merger with Cargo proposed
Add "# Support" or "# Oppose" on a new line in the appropriate section followed by a brief explanation.
Reason: This article and the Cargo article are very similar, and I believe they should be combined to avoid duplication and confusion. "Freight transport" (or alternatively "Cargo transport") is the appropriate title because both articles are about the act of moving goods, and not about the goods themselves (i.e. freight or cargo). Also, I note that the topic Shipping redirects here. Therefore I urge that Cargo be merged into this article. "# Support". Coastwise (talk) 07:04, 2 July 2014 (UTC)
Rename to Freight transport
I would like to propose renaming this article to Freight transport. Currently that title redirects to Intermodal freight transport, which is only one part of the story. Shipping is an ambiguous title, and the muddled state of this article reflects that. Freight transport would match the naming of many other Wikipedia articles that cover forms of transportation, including ship transport.--agr (talk) 13:09, 2 May 2013 (UTC)
- I made the move and cleaned up redirects, about half going to Ship transport and the rest staying with this article. More cleanup of this article is needed.--agr (talk) 23:44, 6 May 2013 (UTC)
This article defines "Cargo" which is also known by the noun "freight". All cargo is defined as inventory of goods in transient storage or enroute on transport. This article explains types of transport used, types of cargo, types of shipment, full and part load cargos, etc.
Freight Trsanport, if being considered, should more appropriately explain the transport aspect and the terms for such transport all categories of tranports used for cargo. One article to explain the cargo or goods, types of tranport used, categories, storage options for cargo, etc. The other to focus on the transport options only (Actually, there is no term such as frieght transport - tranportis better dfined by its modes as freight is a very generic term to refer to any goods in transit). Refine the content and the differentiation to make it apt, rather than redefine to suit.
