The best introduction to Jacobi's philosophy is the preface to the second volume of the Works, and Appendix 7 to the Letters on Spinoza's Theory. See also J Kuhn, Jacobi und die Philosophie seiner Zeit (1834); F Deycks, F. H. Jacobi im Verhältnis zu seinen Zeitgenossen (1848); H Düntzer, Freundesbilder aus Goethes Leben (1853); E Zirngiebl, F. H. Jacobis Leben, Dichten, und Denken, 1867; F. Harms, Über die Lehre von F. H. Jacobi (I876). Jacobi's Auserlesener Briefwechsel has been edited by F Roth in 2 vols. (1825-1827).

controversy

edit

If we split the Pantheism controversy text out to a new article, we could link to it from appropriate articles like lessing, etc. It is difficult to do with the text embedded in the jacobi article. — goethean 18:03, 4 April 2006 (UTC)Reply

Jacobi as Literary Figure

edit

This article needs a section for his literary output which were deeply connected, but critical, of Sturm und Drang, Goethe, and German Romanticism. لسلام عليكم - يونس الوجدي گونزاليس (talk) 23:05, 23 August 2010 (UTC)Reply

Was he of Jewish heritage?

edit

Was he of Jewish heritage, as Jacobi is an Ashkenazic Jewish name? 173.88.246.138 (talk) 07:00, 3 November 2020 (UTC)Reply

Jacobi is a German name, which also happens to be a fairly common Jewish name. It therefore neither proves or disproves his ethnicity. However, given that Jews were forced to live in segregated ghettos and barred from higher education during his lifetime, it's extremely unlikeky that he had any Jewish ancestry. 2A02:C7E:5743:C300:900B:AD26:1C0A:AB14 (talk) 18:18, 2 October 2022 (UTC)Reply

He was definitely a Jew as mentioned in the book Philosophy in Germany — Preceding unsigned comment added by 5.123.255.235 (talk) 14:55, 6 December 2023 (UTC)Reply

Close associate and intimate partner of Goethe

edit

This sentence needs revising:

"In his time, he was also well known among literary circles for his critique of the Sturm and Drang movement, and implicitly close associate and intimate partner of Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, and his visions of atomized individualism." Hazratio (talk) 01:33, 30 November 2022 (UTC)Reply

I do wish I knew what atomized individualism is, but have struck out in searching for something this might have been translated from. I fear whomever explains this will be starting from scratch anyway. Sparafucil (talk) 08:35, 4 February 2024 (UTC)Reply
