Please do not merge this article. There is enough to be said about front curtains. /Yvwv (talk) 14:02, 28 January 2008 (UTC)Reply

Types of curtain

edit

I recently spent several hours researching the different types of front curtain a theater or stage can have– I have added the "olio" curtain to this article (how was this overlooked for so long?) and expanded on the mechanisms used to raise and lower the different types. However, I am still eluded by the difference between waterfall, braille (brail? braile?), and Austrian curtains (and what is the origin of the word "braille" used to describe a curtain anyway?) as well as the subtleties between a Venetian, contour, and a Venetian contour (there seem to be people who distinguish these). Google Books was not helpful– a theater person with a theater text on hand might be able to make better sense of these than I have done here. They require additional treatment.

Also, I have created and added GIF aminations of the Austrian, olio, and traveller curtains to show how they open and close. The article could really use similar animated images of the remaining types to clearly distinguish them– but my time on this earth is limited, and I leave that task to others now.
