Talk:Full-Scale Wind Tunnel

The article is illustrated with one nice pic. Note that the example is not a full-scale plane, however, belying (sp?) the name of the tunnel, which was used for full-size planes of many other models. Additional photos and/or photo uploads could improve the article.

Cost of tunnel

edit

The article cites a cost of $36,900,000, with no specific year. However, that seems like an enormous amount, and in fact Nasa's page at http://www.nasa.gov/centers/langley/news/factsheets/30X60.html cites a budget of $900,000 (although the tunnel was built under budget). I assume this was converted to current inflated dollars, but without citing what "current" is the number has no meaning. -- Dan Griscom (talk) 02:50, 2 June 2012 (UTC)Reply

Property records at NASA Langley show costs at just under $900,000. An inflated cost should not be represented as the cost, unless you want to say something like a cost of $900,000 which would roughly equate to $36,900,000 in 2013.

The Model

edit

It'd be interesting to know more about the SST model in the file photo. The combination of T-tail with a bullet fairing, plus variable-sweep wings, doesn't resemble any of the SST proposals of the time, and I can't find a second image of that design. Perhaps it was just a one-off mock-up. -Ashley Pomeroy (talk) 16:04, 20 August 2024 (UTC)Reply
