The IOC abbreviation of "GBR" actually only refers to Great Britain, except for in Athletics. For sport purposes, Northern Ireland competes with Ireland under IRL. Only in Track & Field does Northern Ireland compete for GBR. I bring this up, because the GBR reference points to the United Kingdom and not Great Britain, which is problematic for the sport articles related to it. I don't know how to fix/address it, so I bring it up here. Hooperswim 04:54, 19 April 2007 (UTC)
What does the "R" stand for? 10 October 2009 —Preceding unsigned comment added by 92.28.35.247 (talk) 10:47, 10 October 2009 (UTC)
- GBR is de facto the ISO 3166-1 code for the United Kingdom, even if the term 'Great Britain' means something else. Regards, Rob (talk) 23:55, 27 August 2013 (UTC)
