Untitled discussion

According to the article, "GEGL (Genetically Engineered Goat, Large) is also the name of GNOME's mascot, a 5-legged goat" but I had always thought that GNOME's mascot was the "Gnome's Foot..." 09:53, 13 March 2008 (UTC)

Yeah, GNOME doesn't have a mascot[1], except whatever made the footprint. GEGL has historically been an easter egg. -- carol (talk) 03:38, 19 March 2008 (UTC)

Thanks, Carol. Next question: The article states that "As of 2007-12-20, it [GEGL]has been introduced into the development version of GIMP". As 2.4 (stable) was released at around this time, anything being "introduced into the development series" would, to my understanding, be part of the new 2.5 branch. However, according to the GIMP developers' site at http://developer.gimp.org/NEWS there has been "no release in the 2.5 development series yet". I just noticed the image in the article also apparently shows a GIMP 2.5 dev. build. Is it simply a case of the GIMP news page not being updated or is this a build that has not been put into official circulation yet? I'm really confused now! 130.102.0.178 (talk) 04:09, 20 March 2008 (UTC)

No release in the 2.5 development series yet means just that -- no tarball. http://developer.gnome.org/tools/svn.html tells how to get the source -- GNU was originally about (I think) emacs and gcc and a printer.... So Subversion is basically a CVS-type system for collaborative source code deveopment and I can grab the code from that and compile it? Thanks. I might probably wait until it is a little more mature yet, maybe after a few tarballs are released. By the way, I just looked up how to access that Easter Egg. I've been using GNOME for years and didn't know about it. The only Linux Easter Eggs I was aware of were the "Book of Mozilla" one and that space invader game in OO.org Calc. You learn something new every day! Very appropriate to be talking about an Easter Egg at Easter time! Yes, 2002 was good with the release of GNOME 2.0. They've really built a lot on it since those halcyon days! I was grabbing the test builds of the old Red Hat 8.0 and saw it evolving. I had played with open source on and off prior to that, from about 1999 onwards but the GNOME rewrite and OpenOffice suddenly made it a whole lot more viable for me. By the way, on the other side of the fence, I have started playing with KDE 4.0. More stable than I thought but very feature incomplete at this stage. Okay, I 've tested it now. The GEGL Easter Egg apparently no longer exists as of GNOME 2.20/Fedora 8 but another one I found out about when searching the web for info, does. This is the Easter Egg that allows "Wanda" the fish applet to swim freely about the screen when a hidden command is typed. Have a happy Easter, Carol. GEGL design todo

I have split up the information on GEGL into logical sections.

With the section GEGL design: currently describes design and capabilities, it really should be split into those two sections (or add a subsection for derived capabilities) and expanded.... If anyone has the time and motivation, please go for it. --Gnepets (talk) 09:20, 16 May 2009 (UTC)

GEGL website off air?

The link on the page to the GEGL web-site has been dead for weeks now. Anybody knows where it has gone?

The Git repo is still online, v0.1.2 has just been released. I wonder where GEGL is heading. Does it strive to decouple the inner works from the GIMP UI? Could a future version be used to build a usable graphics editor?--87.162.12.35 (talk) 23:23, 9 February 2010 (UTC)

Removed speculation about OpenCL port

The OpenCL section contained this sentence:

The project has been stagnate since May 2017, perhaps waiting in a stable state before GEGL is added in Gimp 2.10.

I removed everything after the comma, as GIMP 2.10 has now been out for a couple of months and there's still no movement on the GEGL-OpenCL project. I suspect it's simply abandoned, not waiting on anything. -- FeRD_NYC (talk) 08:31, 8 July 2018 (UTC)
