His occupation is listed as "slave holder"
that doesn't actually seem like an occupation
in the same way that "land owner" is not really an occupation
landlord might be an occupation, but not land owner
the title of the article indicates that his main importance was that he was a merchant
the article may imply that he invested in slaves independently from rice plantations
perhaps as a merchant he traded in slaves
Maybe that, along with his activities in government, business and revolution
could help to determine an actual occupation (or series of them) for this person
