editI came across a mention of Gafat in Adelung & Vater's (1806-1817) Mithridates, vol. III, p. 124-125:
- Dieser Nation eigen ist ein kleiner Strich Landes in der Nähe von Damót and den südlichen Ufern des Nils, den sie so wie die Agows verehren, übrigens aber wohnen sie durch alle Provinzen zerstreut, barbarisch und unruhig.
Not all that helpful, actually, but still nice. Agows = Agaw, of course. A small sample of words is included on page 127. — mark ✎ 20:52, 14 December 2005 (UTC)
Following contribution removed from the article due to -- well, its rambling & a confused exposition vaguely related to the subject, & some of it can not be verified:
- There are hidden and unknown people who live in the Historical place of Gaffat in South Gonder ,Debaretabor. Gaffat was the place where Emperor Theodore built his cannon the so called Sabastopol. According to some mystic people who considers themselives as a Meyesaw claim that there is a hidden knowledge in Gafft .However ,to redicover such a knoweldge is impossible with out the lost languadge of Gafat . The name Meyesaw is known as the scared name of the Emperor Theodore of Ethiopia who is belived to be wise beyond his generation.
