Characters

edit

I've had little luck in trying to find out the characters' names. Through numerous different Google searches, all I've been able to find are the following:

  • James (starting guy with gun)
  • Siren (starting girl)
  • Tonga (starting guy with spear)[1]
  • Zaemon (wind knight)[2]

If anyone happens to know the names of the rest of the characters, help me out.--RiffRaff1138 16:16, 11 December 2005 (UTC)Reply

I've been searching pretty hard, and that's all I was able to find as well. I didn't want to put them in the article, because it was incomplete. Some pictures would probably be good as well. Pinano 00:31, 18 December 2005 (UTC)Reply

Classic Arcade Grafix sells a Gain Ground arcade bezel, which has pictures of each of the 20 characters, with information listed alongside them. A minute or two ago, I sent them an e-mail asking if they could give me the character names as listed on the bezel. The site says to allow for 24 hours for a response...

If they do give me the names (small chance, but here's hoping), I can take the character mugshots from the game, and add the pictures and information to the article.--RiffRaff1138 19:59, 23 February 2006 (UTC)Reply

Success! I've found some websites listing all of the characters' original Japanese names (in katakana; I romanized them as best as I could). I'm still in the process of screencapping all of their mugshots, but at least the hard part is over with.

  • Johnny (starter guy with gun)
  • Betty (starter girl with grenades)
  • Athra (starter guy with spear)
  • Barber (Viking-looking bowman)
  • Gaston (spearman who bears resemblance to Arnold Schwarzenegger)
  • Moss (bowman who doesn't look like a viking)
  • Robbie (guy with rocket launcher and domed helmet)
  • Cyber (rocket guy who appears to have an underwater breathing apparatus)
  • Glow Knight (knight with four rotating orbs as special attack)
  • Fire Knight (rather self-explanatory)
  • Water Knight (again...)
  • Zaemon (tornado-summoning samurai)
  • Mamu (short-haired bomerang user)
  • Valkyrie (long-haired, headband-wearing boomerang user)
  • Kou (mustachioed, SMG-wielding guy)
  • General (M. Bison-looking guy with flamethrower)
  • Professor (gunman with mustache, flight cap, and shades)
  • Kiddo (gunman with motorcycle helmet)
  • Mad Poppy (guy with shades and huge shoulder-mounted flame launcher)
  • Honey (blonde with sunglasses and grenades)

I'm not entirely certain "Barber", "Gaston", "Moss", and "Mad Poppy" are accurate romanizations (Directly romanized, they were "Baabaru", "Gasucano", "Massu", and "Maddopapii"). Also, "Professor"'s name was written in kanji, not katakana, and "Professor" was what Babelfish translated it as. And we all know how reliable Babelfish is... Still, it's a lot better than nothing.

If someone were to get access to the PS2 Sega Ages version, they could confirm these. I've seen Johnny, Betty, Athra, and Glow Knight's names in videos of the PS2 game in action, so I know for a fact that they are correct. And I found Honey and Valkyrie's names written in English on Japanese Gain Ground fanart, so I have to assume they're right too. --RiffRaff1138 20:40, 7 March 2006 (UTC)Reply

Riff Raff... marry me. I've been trying to find that character list for eons, having been introduced to it a long time ago by my uncle (who to this day remains an avid fan of the game). Recently, thanks to MAME, I rediscovered the game and made a hobby out of trying to find a character list. My efforts were fruitless until now. Bless you. I've also found an excellent resource for the game: http://hg101.classicgaming.gamespy.com/gainground/gainground.htm Cheers.

Hey those are not the names I remember that appeared on the instructions of my SEGA game. Here are the ones i can remember:

Tonga: starting african guy with a spear James: starting guy with a gun Siren: starting girl Diamond: They guy who threw paralyzing water Sylvia: boomerang girl who only threw them north Rachel: boomerang girl who could throw them to all directions

If its mentioning Robocop and M Bison I think its worth noting the blond guy you start with looks a lot like Jean-Claude Van Damme. 66.74.208.115 (talk) 20:29, 24 May 2010 (UTC)Reply

Fair use rationale for Image:Gg Zaemon.jpg

Image:Gg Zaemon.jpg is being used on this article. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in this Wikipedia article constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to insure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If there is other other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on the other images used on this page. Note that any fair use images uploaded after 4 May, 2006, and lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.BetacommandBot 04:48, 5 June 2007 (UTC)Reply

A Few Questions

edit

I heard that Robbie is Lobby. Is that right? I always thought that Lobby was the right name, but I got this idea from some random website.

Also, I saw that characters like Betty and Honey are slow characters, but they aren't really that slow. Cyber, Robbie (Lobby?) and Mud Puppy (as examples) are really slow characters. Should those semi-quick characters not be labeled as slow characters? Thanks-BlueAmethyst .:*:. 01:14, 10 November 2007 (UTC)Reply

They may not be as slow as Mud Puppy, but Betty and Honey still seem pretty slow to me. I called them as I saw them. As for R/Lobby... I've seen a screenshot of Sega Ages Gain Ground displaying his name as "Lobby", so it seems technically, that's the official spelling. However, since's wearing a mech-suit and thus looks like a robot, I figured "Lobby" was just an Engrish mistake, and that it was supposed to be "Robby". Barring official word from Sega, I'm sticking with "Robby". It makes more sense to me.--RiffRaff1138 (talk) 20:31, 4 March 2008 (UTC)Reply

List of characters

edit

It serves no purpose. The characters handedness, walking speed, and weapons all fall outside WP:VGSCOPE, which indicates that "If the content only has value to people actually playing the game, it is unsuitable." The gallery of fair-use images is a freaking nightmare, and was deleted once before for good reason: our fair-use policy dictates "Minimal usage" and "Significance", neither of which apply here.

As such, I heartily recommend removing it. Nifboy (talk) 03:51, 28 September 2008 (UTC)Reply

Hand, speed, and weapons I'll grant you. But at the very least, we should keep the characters' names and portraits. Their names aren't given anywhere in game, except in the Japan-only Sega Ages PS2 version; nobody outside Japan would know the names unless they managed to find a Genesis version manual or an intact arcade cabinet. Or, through luck, managed to find them listed in katakana on a Japanese website, or find the one Gain Ground fansite with low-quality video walkthrough of the PS2 version, like I did. It's rare and important information, and it should be retained.--RiffRaff1138 (talk) 04:37, 28 September 2008 (UTC)Reply

While I sympathize with the plight of "rare and important information" I still don't think Wikipedia is the place for it. Have you considered porting it somewhere more suitable, like the Gaming Wikia? Nifboy (talk) 05:56, 28 September 2008 (UTC)Reply
I fail to see why it doesn't belong on Wikipedia. However, if you really feel that it's absolutely necessary to remove the only useful information the article contains, I can't exactly stop you, can I? I'll see about adding a Gain Ground page to that Gaming Wiki. I've already backed up the character table code and the portraits. Do what you must.--RiffRaff1138 (talk) 14:59, 28 September 2008 (UTC)Reply
