somewhat controversial in some circles is weasel words. besides, what's controversial about being afraid of dying?John Lawrence (talk) 19:54, 21 March 2009 (UTC)Reply

This is one of the most amazingly bad articles I have ever seen on Wikipedia (against much competition). Did you guys even READ the fraggin lyrics? It does not liken galveston to a Woman, it clearly says "she was 21, when I left galveston". It does not say "I am afraid of dying", it says "I am so afraid of dying, before I dry the tears she is crying".

I deleted these idiotic misquotes, but I am sure you will put them back. Stupidity is the greatest power in the universe. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 205.229.50.10 (talk) 01:40, 28 June 2009 (UTC)Reply

Why is this song "widely, but erroneously, perceived as a protest song"? There are no words of protest in the lyrics, and nothing but sadness at separation.203.184.41.226 (talk) 21:59, 30 November 2012 (UTC)Reply

Yes, this is just a ‘girl I left behind me’ type song. What’s the fuss? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 77.69.34.203 (talk) 08:02, 12 August 2019 (UTC)Reply

Because shallow and facetious people want to co opt any art or anything including popular songs into meaning what they wish it to mean to serve their agendas, and regardless of what the actual meaning is. The songs lyrics are not cryptic or full of hidden messages they simply describe the feelings of a soldier his fear, missing home and his sweetheart a universal and timeless sentiment. The word cannon is used in the lyric a 19th century term for artillery I have read somewhere that the song is about a Spanish American war soldier but could be allegorical to any. 82.29.135.200 (talk) 00:39, 5 February 2024 (UTC)Reply
