Backlit Spongebob/Charizard/Venusaur?

edit

Can I get a confirmation source that the Spongebob SP features the new backlight? Kat, Queen of Typos 20:06, 29 March 2006 (UTC)Reply

Charizard and Venusaur SPs were not backlit, so I removed them from the listing. I'm pretty sure the tattoo version was frontlit, but I've never actually handled one so I left it in...

could i also get a confimation that all new SPs have the backlit? or do they still make the ones with the frontlit?

I can confirm that the NES collectors edition in NOT backlit, unless they made more then one revision of it, since I own a frontlit version.--SkiDragon 22:53, 19 May 2007 (UTC)Reply

Arm 7 processor,precisely an ARM7TDMI:

Compatibility

edit

The article says "The software library and general hardware specifications are identical to those of the Game Boy Advance." The original GBA had the 32-bit processor and also the original GameBoy Z80 (according to Wikipedia). So lacking the Z80, wouldn't the SP's library (no GB/GBC titles) and hardware specifications be then *not* the same as the GBA's?

- Jack Vermicelli 2warped@gmail.com 98.243.83.191 (talk) 22:51, 23 September 2009 (UTC)Reply

According to the article, the SP does have a Z80. -sesuPRIME 23:33, 23 September 2009 (UTC)Reply

Special

edit

Here's a link to the FAQ on Nintendo's website that shows that SP stands for Special: [1]. This article and the Handheld game console article both are changed on a regular basis to the incorrect "special project", and although it's minor, well, it's wrong. I agree that the link doesn't belong in the article (except maybe in a bibliography). --Plutor 06:19, 2 Jan 2005 (UTC)

Why was this moved?

edit

The software library and general hardware specifications are identical to those of the Game Boy Advance, so I don't see how its own article containing a whopping three paragraphs is a good idea. Sockatume, Talk 16:54, 7 Jan 2005 (UTC)

Well, the Game Boy Pocket is integrated into the main Game Boy article, so I'd have to agree. Otherwise, if you keep the Game Boy Advance SP article separate, then you should separate the Game Boy Pocket out of the Game Boy article.
The Game Boy Pocket changed almsot nothing - smaller and lighter and with a better screen. The SP reverts back to the vertical design, adds a frontlight, reverses the cartridge loading slot, and has a clamshell design. I think it is different enough to constitute its own article. Afterburner

edit

Theafter burner page has this quote from Game Boy Advance SP creator Kenichi Sugino: So, in that aspect, it helped us during SP development as well.

This is quite funny as the lighting system used in the SP uses *exactly* the same system as the afterburner. Indeed it is clear that Nintedo just took the design for it... If you don't belive this post look up the stealth dimmer chips. They were originally designed for the afterburner, but they now claim support for the GBA-SP also. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 65.41.205.245 (talkcontribs) 08:57, 25 March 2005 (UTC)Reply

PSP vs GBA sales

edit

About this quote recently deleted:

Under sales pressure from Sony PSP, Game Boy Advance SP regularly outsells Sony's PSP in both the US and the UK.

According to NPD information which Yahoo picks up here, 64% of the handheld consoles sold during 2005 and 52% of software for them in USA were GBA. As for UK, I am not sure about it. I have seen weekly rankings released by them in which both DS and SP outsell PSP, but it is hard to get a bigger picture because ChartTrack does not count units sold in certain big retailers (in example, a couple of weeks after ChartTrack claimed 800,000 DS were sold throught UK, Nintendo confirmed they have sold 1,000,000; that is a 25% error margin). -- ReyBrujo 17:55, 6 February 2006 (UTC)Reply

Image Problems

edit

I think we should put a gallery section of this article where we can post SP images! —Preceding unsigned comment added by 69.139.176.11 (talkcontribs)

There's already an image. There's no need for an entire gallery. – Someguy0830 (Talk | contribs) 14:55, 17 April 2006 (UTC)Reply

One or two images of the SP would be enough, but a gallery is not necessary. -- ReyBrujo 14:57, 17 April 2006 (UTC)Reply

Um,can you update the Blue GBA SP image,it's blurry!

I have a blue GBA SP but not a decent enough camera. --Thorpe | talk 15:55, 18 April 2006 (UTC)Reply

Take a picture of it&scan it on the internet!

Headphone Jack

edit

Actually, there are adapters for the SP which allow you to attach both the AC charger and a pair of standard headphones to the SP at the same time. I bought a kit that included such an adapter around the same time I bought my first SP over a year ago. Unfortunately, I don't have a reference right now or I'd add such information to the page. --AlphaEtaPi 19:11, 12 May 2006 (UTC)Reply

SP ?

edit

Does it stand for Super Portable because it folds in two ? Mr.Willison

In the Nintendo Official Magazine it was stated as standing for Special Project, IIRC. Alan 20:34, 10 August 2006 (UTC)Reply

Hmm... That's funny. I always thought it stood for Second Protocol. Y'know, it's the second iteration of the Game Boy Advance! Anyways, now I know! I'm Jake9 "Da' Pie!" 03:07, 9 April 2009 (UTC)Reply

I have always thought the second letter stood for portable - was never really sure about the first 94.193.199.182 (talk) 17:19, 2 March 2010 (UTC) MikeReply

successor

edit

Actually nintendo DS is not successor of GBA SP-DS is completely another nintendo handheld line

I agree, and this discussion is going on at the DS page, too. If that one is resolved with GBA being removed as the DS's predecessor, then the same should be done here, removing DS as the GBA's successor. I'll keep an eye on it. 209.216.93.104 17:16, 15 August 2006 (UTC)Reply

The debate rages on at the Nintendo DS page, mostly now on the relation between the words predecessor and successor. But what has been established is that the DS is not a successor to the GBA SP via multiple sources. 1. Therefore, I have removed Nintendo DS from the list of successors. 70.126.149.223 03:50, 20 August 2006 (UTC)Reply

What the Hell is going on at the Bottom of Criticism

edit

"This was also a common criticism of the older Game Boy models, and resulted in the original Game Boy Advance's popular horizontal layout."

I remember everyone disliking the new horizontal layout and wanting a more traditional look.

"This criticism was corrected in the Game Boy Micro, which opted for the original Game Boy Advance's horizontal layout as opposed to a traditional Game Boy-style layout."

Not really, its just that the micro is too small for a vertical layout.

The last bit of Criticism is just opinion. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 87.254.87.151 (talkcontribs) .

'Neutrality is disputed' template

edit

I've removed the formentioned template as it was firstly added without discussion, therefore there was nothing to support the supposed 'disputed' neutrality, and secondly I 'neutraled' the article up a bit, making it less of a complaint about the product and making it more of a general description. Before you add a template of that nature, please come here to point out specific parts that you have found POV. --Thaddius 15:19, 19 December 2006 (UTC)Reply

Battery Life Citations

edit

What is needed exactly? The numbers listed do seem to match up with what I've observed with my backlit SP. Is there any way to actually provide a citation for this other than conducting a study with several hundred GBA owners and requiring them all to play till the battery dies? Zeebo-010 00:50, 23 December 2006 (UTC)Reply

I would like something added to the main article to tell us whether the battery life on the backlit SP is significantly shorter or the same or longer than the frontlit SP if it's possible --Live Steam Mad (talk) 19:39, 27 February 2010 (UTC)Reply

Gold TRU edition

edit

I don't have a good cite for it other than owning one (and getting up really frickin early on that day to go buy it) (YEAH YEAH O.R., whatever) and this message board post someone made back at that time http://forums.dvdfile.com/gaming-deals-bargains/38716-gba-sp-gold-sma-4-smb-3-99-a.html Good cite, maybe not. But I just wanted to show something to say I wasn't just adding to the article by making something up out of the blue.76.226.103.166 (talk) 01:31, 27 July 2009 (UTC)Reply

Unless you can find a reliable source it shouldn't be in the article. -sesuPRIME 06:43, 27 July 2009 (UTC)Reply

Just some proof they exist, not that they originated with TRU. Since there are actual images of the units, then regardless of the site as a "reliable source" (you do realize you come off as "know it all-ish" when you link policies and terms like that instead of just mentioning it, don't you? just sayin, it would come off better if you didn't, I know you don't mean it that way [insert link to good faith here]) it at least shows they exist and should be listed among the colors available. Furthermore, none of the other colors listed have any cites at all, so my bad cite, if actually bad, still trumps that. If you remove this again, please remove all uncited material, especially the limited Best Buy model that's entirely unsourced. 76.226.111.147 (talk) 03:57, 10 July 2010 (UTC)Reply

I noticed that http://www.nintendo.co.jp/ir/library/historical_data/pdf/consolidated_sales_e0806.pdf (and similar links) have gone dead. In most articles the link can be replaced by the most recent version,[2] but this article seems to be using them to source a chart of sales over time. You may find this external link checker useful, and in the future you could use WebCite to preserve them for the future; the December 2009 version is already preserved at http://www.webcitation.org/5nXieXX2B. Screen size not given

edit

I see in the article that the screen size is not given. Can someone please measure it carefully as best they can (best to measure in mm as it's easier! and add inch conversions in brackets (mm / 25.4 = inches!) and add the info to the main article. I don't own one so can't measure it myself. --Live Steam Mad (talk) 05:26, 18 February 2010 (UTC)Reply

Separate diagonal, width, and height measurements for the screen would be most welcome --Live Steam Mad (talk) 05:29, 18 February 2010 (UTC)Reply

Casing material ? easier to scratch ?

edit

In the article it mentions "the casing is made from a different material, making it more prone to scratches than previous Game Boy systems" but the casing on the GBA SP ( Frontlit model ) is merely painted and that's why it's more prone to scratches, it's not a particularly "different material" or special material at all. The original grey-white Gameboy wasn't painted as I recall, so doesn't show scratches so easily, so the explanation is simple. My silver Game Boy Pocket is also painted and also scratches as easily as the GBASP. --Live Steam Mad (talk) 12:21, 8 March 2010 (UTC)Reply

SP Mark II

edit

I think there should be a picture of the backlit darker SP mark II. Speaking of which, no one has confirmed what SP stands for :D Think about it this way, Mark II is the only nintendo console on wikipedia without a picure !--213.83.125.225 (talk) 14:36, 10 June 2010 (UTC)Reply

Better picture for infobox

edit

I think there should be a transparent (as in there is no background) picture of the SP, and possibly one that shows the SP straght forward and not at an angle. Pictures of the Game Boy Advance are transparent, and straight forward. Why not the SP? Also submitted to File Talk:Game Boy Advance SP picture thing. Also look at my above 'SP Mark II' bother. --213.83.125.225 (talk) 14:40, 10 June 2010 (UTC)Reply

7bit Z80

edit

Hello,

In the article, it is mentionned that the GBA SP has a 7bit Zilog Z80. I thought this processor was an 8-bit one.

But before editing, I wanted to make sure: is it a typo or am I missing something ?
