PAX is the largest gaming convention in the States

edit

I'm pretty sure that with over 34,000 attendees over 3 days last year PAX is the largest Gaming Con in the United States . . and that number is expect to more than double this year. Just thought i'd bring that up and see what people think before i bump gencon down to number 2 in the article. --TimeCruiserMike (talk) 07:20, 1 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

As you can see below in the Video Game Conventions topic, there was some question about how events like PAX should be classified which never reached a consensus. While it has some tabletop gaming, PAX's primary focus is video games. This topic is focused on conventions whose primary activity is some mix of hobby games, and they tend to work differently (as far as I've been able to research from past PAX websites and forum coverage) from PAX. My questions would be: how different is it, and should that make a difference? -- Parody (talk) 06:42, 7 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

GAPScon no More

edit

I'm from Pittsburgh and we were wondering if GAPScon could be removed as it confuses some looking to attend our Pittsburgh, PA GASPcon, which in November 2007 will meet for the 8th time. We can safely remove GAPScon from the wikipedia list of gaming conventions and I believe we should remove it from the list of gaming conventions. If you want to contact Ken Grazier, President of GAPS yourself, his contact info is listed under the GAPS page under "News" here: http://www.clubs.psu.edu/up/gaps/

Kenneth Grazier <-> Mon, Sep 10, 2007 at 4:51 PM To: Michael Thompson <-> Michael,

Unfortunately, GAPS has been shrinking so much that it has taken everything we had at the end of last school year to actually set up officers for this year. Unless we get a giant burst of members, which I doubt will happen, then GAPScon at this point and time will not be happening.

Thank you for this consideration, and if anything changes, I'll be sure to notify you immediately.

Sincerely, Kenneth Grazier President of GAPS —Preceding unsigned comment added by Razzinplant (talkcontribs) 00:32, 11 September 2007 (UTC)Reply

Video Game Conventions?

edit

I noticed a few conventions on this list that are definitely video game conventions (Blizzcon, E3, Tokyo Game Show) and I'm suspicious there are probably others, since I am not familiar with every gaming convention out there. Do these belong on this list? The paragraph at the top discusses hobby gaming, with no mention of video gaming. Perhaps there should be a separate list and/or page for video game conventions, since they are really quite different from the hobby gaming/boardgaming/rpg conventions?

I agree that splitting them off would be a good idea. If it helps, video gaming conventions have been sorted into at least two separate Categories: computer and video game trade shows and LAN parties. --Parody 22:52, 26 July 2006 (UTC)Reply
It sounds like better pointers, or perhaps a disambiguation note at the top of the page, would be a good idea. Jiawen 06:55, 20 September 2006 (UTC)Reply
Splitting video gaming conventions and hobby conventions is not actually a good idea: almost all sizable hobby conventions have a video game room or five, and I imagine there is a lot of crossover the other way too. --User:Downtown_dan_seattle 22:15, 29 August 2006 (UTC)Reply
I agree with splitting them off. While gaming conventions may well have a video game room and/or LAN-party set up, computer/videogame trade shows don't have wargaming, RPG or LARP rooms - there might be the odd exception (I'm sure Blizzard will be pushing the Warcraft CCG at the next Blizzcon) but they're very much the exception rather than the norm. I think the important thing to consider when pigeonholing a convention/trade show/other gathering is the primary emphasis of the event. For example, Con of the North has three computer game rooms/areas: a small, semi-modern PC room; a Crossfire room; and a Midimaze setup. However, very few (if any) people who go to CotN would think of it as a video game convention; RPGs, miniatures, and board games are the main activities. Thus it's only a gaming convention. Gen Con Indy has a video game room and some vendors, but it's tiny compared to everything else that happens there. (We'll see what happens next year, though.)
Similarly, many science fiction conventions have gaming in one form or another, but nobody thinks of them as gaming conventions. If they do truly give gaming equal footing with panels, partying, and everything else then they should be "promoted" to multigenre conventions.
Penny Arcade Expo is often used as an example of a video game trade show/gaming convention. There's only one event listed on their website, so I'm not sure how big non-video gaming is compared to everything else that goes on there. (The forums have some picture links, so there is some non-video gaming going on.) Regardless, there's no reason why it or any similar exception couldn't have both categories. -- Parody 06:43, 4 September 2006 (UTC)Reply
One more thing: Gamer and Talk:Gamer might be interesting reading. The current Gamer article is completely oriented towards video gaming, while many gamers only think of the term as applying towards non-video gaming or their own favorite game type. -- Parody 07:05, 4 September 2006 (UTC)Reply

Locale-based list

edit

I think the list of cons is already getting too long. I think we should either replace it with one organized by locale (for the US, by state), or add such a list and keep the current list for cross-reference. Jiawen 06:57, 20 September 2006 (UTC)Reply

Sorting into locales is a very good idea. Subsorting by general time of the year would be useful too. Is it time to promote the list to its own page? -- Parody 17:27, 21 September 2006 (UTC)Reply
We now have sortable tables in List of science fiction conventions that allow the user to sort by date, location, or category. Don't let the title throw you off, we will probably change the name to something more general that better describes it. I think that gaming cons would be a good fit for it. The value obtained is that the user can sort to his home location and see the entire spectrum of cons at his disposal.--Tbmorgan74 03:06, 12 March 2007 (UTC)Reply
I like the list style, but I'd like to see a separate list in addition to or instead of having a large unified list of "fan conventions". A separate list loads and sorts faster (the list is already pretty long) and can have its "genre" column tuned for gaming: miniatures, video games, LARPs, etc. Also, a lot of gamers don't go to any other kind of con! Hopefully you won't mind if I steal the idea and donate back an easy-to-merge table of game conventions. :) -- Parody 03:55, 12 March 2007 (UTC)Reply
If you keep the column definitions exactly the same, it will be very easy to cross copy content from one to the other. Notice the format of the date codes is important. Also the double pipes || are critical to have exactly the right number to complete the row of cells to allow sorts. Finally I suggest your genre column content include keyword "game" so that if we do copy rows to other tables, the gaming nature of the event is self evident. "RPG" has game in the acronym, so that is self evident. as well as LARP, because there is no other kind of LARP than a role playing game. But video, miniature, board, trivia, strategy, all would ideally be followed by "game". In a table of nothing but games, "video" is self evident. but in a list of all cons, "video" could be confused with "movie", or "movie making", or "short films".--Tbmorgan74 15:45, 12 March 2007 (UTC)Reply
I figured someone would do a search-and-replace to "game" from everything else when putting data into the unified table, since you haven't defined a way to indicate subgenres. -- Parody 04:49, 13 March 2007 (UTC)Reply
I was going to post another topic, but I think this thread is more appropriate... Perhaps the List of gaming conventions part should be split into another article? It's gonna be a very long list and shouldn't lists be in separate articles?Somecrowd (talk) 06:23, 22 April 2008 (UTC)Reply
I'd intended to create List of gaming conventions but have never had the time. It's definitely been needed for a while. If you're up for it, go right ahead. -- Parody (talk) 06:51, 7 June 2008 (UTC)Reply
