This seems very interesting. I'm curious to how detailed these delusions can be.
It happens to me when I rub my eyelids.
This may refer -if done right- to 'trance' states. Any individual -as I have experienced myself- can focus all their thoughts on one sound pattern for a relatively long period of time, while other sounds play in the background. This has the effect of blocking intrusive thoughts while the mind enters a state of profound connection with... something quite unique (either a deeper part of your mind or a parallel spiritual world, whatever suits your opinion on these things), during which it is undeniable that your consciousness is operating at a different level. I don't know how it works for others, but for me said altered state of consciousness enhances a whole lot of paranormal experiences that routinely happen to me at a minor scale.
It's not very scientific, I know, but there's a lot of material online and I think it's worth mentioning and, of course, refuting with the proper scientific sources if one were to create a balanced article. I apologize for my tenuous grasp of the English language, my native language is actually Spanish. I just wanted to add my grain of sand to an article I found quite interesting.
