I don't think there is any evidence to suggest that pub serving high quality food started at that particular pub. I can remeber going to pubs long before that, which attempted to do the same thing. Simply because someone coined a marketing term does mean that invented the underlying concept.--Jirate 17:13, 2005 Jan 2 (UTC)
Is it fair to say that the Fat Duck is a pub, or a gastro-pub? I always understood it to be far more involved that that; as Heston's TV show tonight will no doubt show! 16:50, 2006 Oct 31 (UTC)
The Fat Duck is not a pub. People often confuse it with Blumenthals other resteraunt, which is a pub, so I shall remove the entry. Adamshappy 16:56, 1 December 2006 (UTC)

I removed the sentence "In November, 2008, The Gastro Pub, The Fox and Hounds, Knatts Valley, Sevenoaks, Kent. Won the TV AWARDS Destination pub of the year 2008 http://www.foxnhounds.co.uk". "Criticisms" section removed
editI certainly think there could be a place for a section on this subject - perhaps dealing with the charge that some very ordinary pubs use it to imply that their food is better than it really is - just not this section, which I reproduce in full below:
- Recently, scholars have debated the necessity for such an obviously redundant term. Instead, phrases such as "a restaurant with an extensive bar" or "a bar with high quality food" have been suggested as alternative methods of identification. Additionally, New York Magazine has introduced the term "Pub Grub" to refer to food of a similar concept.
The first part of the paragraph is unreferenced waffle: which scholars? When? Where? The second part is silly: it's pretty obvious that "gastropub" will be preferred by both proprietors and writers to "a restaurant with an extensive bar" simply on grounds of brevity and snappiness. The final sentence was referenced (to this article) but the idea that NY Mag introduced the phrase "Pub Grub" is utterly laughable: it long predates "gastropub"; I saw it commonly in Britain in the 1980s and it wasn't new then. Term "coined in 1991"?

editI'm not happy with the new definition given in the lead. Lots of pubs serve 'comfort food', but that doesn't make them gastropubs. The previous definition described gastropubs as hybrid pub-restaurants which, imo, is a far more accurate description.Obscurasky (talk) 18:53, 5 January 2022 (UTC)
