Talk:Gathering place

Article rewrite

edit

So, seeing as I just rewrote this article, I thought I should explain some of my changes:

  • I removed the claim that gathering places are "crucial to culture and civilization", because the linked article didn't seem to explain this. It's quite possible that it's true, but I don't know enough about the subject to confirm it.
  • I removed the paragraph that stated "Gathering places may be defined as such, through architecture and urbanism (Stonehenge), or may be spontaneous (demonstrations)", as it didn't make sense to me. A demonstration is a gathering, not a gathering place, and I don't see how a gathering place could possibly be spontaneous. Maybe the author meant that gatherings may occur anywhere spontaneously, so any public space can become a gathering place? In any case, it's gone now.
  • I got rid of most of the "see also" links, because they seemed only tangentially related to the article. If someone adds some more anthropological/sociological content, it may be worth bringing them back.
  • I left the sociology-stub template in, because there's a lot of potential for sociological discussion (also, I couldn't find any better-fitting stub categories).

Again, I think there's a lot of potential for interesting material (do all cultures have gathering places? how are they used? what are the social consequences when people have no convenient place to gather? etc.), but I don't know nearly enough about the subject to contribute it myself. I hope someone takes this on! —smably 01:40, 24 August 2006 (UTC)Reply
