real or complex analytic function

The derivation part is (to me at least) somewhat unclear. It would improve if some knowledgeable person would add a more precise definition of Gauss's continued fractions. In particular I can't find out whether real or complex analytic functions are meant. The z suggests complex, but suggestion has no place in an encyclopedia.
