Comparable English architectural terms?

Evidently the gavit (entrance hall) is distinctive to Armenian church architecture, but some more comparative description from WP:RS to Western/Mediterranean architecture would be useful. In ictu oculi (talk) 23:13, 2 September 2011 (UTC)
