Does anybody know where the bipolar diagnosis came from? I have many bipolar relatives and some of Tierney's symptoms related in her book do not sound bipolar to me. Please do not remove section on The Mirror Cracked or put citation tag. The person who removed this part of the article (which I put back since the event is referenced in every book about her and Oleg Cassini then they put on citation tag. Why do you object to a citation tag? The claim may be obvious to you, but not to a casual reader like me. If you are that familiar with the books, the simple solution is to add a reference to one of them. Clarityfiend 18:53, 18 October 2007 (UTC)

Additional RS are needed; she has been written about. In addition, cites from her autobiography have to include the specific page number for each cite, not one reference with all page numbers cited.Parkwells (talk) 17:25, 21 January 2014 (UTC)

Most beautiful comment

It's hardly notable that a film star is beautiful. That Zanuck, the man who discovered her and made money from her chose to say she was "most beautiful" is personal opinion, nor does the fact he was famous make it any less subjective, or more true. If another producer said she was "ugly and overrated", should that appear in Wiki too? I think obviously not. Wiki is an encyclopedia, not a fan site where everyone is beautiful and talented. Finally if statements like this are made, they must have a reliable source. Hollywood gossip without foundation is wholly unacceptable in Wiki. (And the idea that Zanuck "discovered" her seems unattested, if not contradicted by the article itself.)

The "most beautiful water carrier" comment, a little later in the article, differs in several respects: it's cited, it's from a relatively unbiased source, it's suggestive of how Tierney gained recognition. Finally, it's rather interesting.

I have no intention of defaming Gene Tierney, in fact I like her acting.

Zanuck "discovered" her while see was appearing on broadway in The Male Animal (1940) age19 . Discovered in the sense of grooming her for film stardom. She had been offered a contact at 17 with Warner Bros. but turned it down. At 18 with MGM for National Velvet, deal fell though. Again at 18 Tierney signed with Columbia which went nowhere. Yep, no question there are those "big events" which are a watershed. In a way though, it's unfair to attribute her success to a lucky break. It seems the bulk of the Wiki article is saying that she worked her way into bigger roles due to her talent and hard work.

Image size

Please refer to WP:IMGSIZE, which says "As a rule images should not be set to a fixed size (i.e. one that overrides this default)" and WP:Images#Forced image size which says "As a rule, images should not be set to a larger fixed size than the 180px default." Setting to larger sizes with one edit summary that indicated it was a preference isn't what is meant by user preferences. Template:Infobox actor also notes in its instructions "imagesize: This parameter should only be used if it is necessary to overrule viewers' default thumb size preferences." That never refers to enlarging images based on one individual's preference, but in cases when there is a technical issue with the original image size, such as graininess. When you place a numerical size for an image, you override the incorporated Wikipedia default size, which is 180px. When you override the default size, then you take away the ability for users to set their own user preferences for image sizing. The images on Gene Tierney have none of the qualities outlined under MOS:IMAGES that would indicate a need for overriding the default. Thank you. Wildhartlivie (talk) 03:40, 7 October 2009 (UTC)

If it exists somewhere else, it is probably because no one had gone through the article to notice it recently. I fixed the Hepburn article. You won't find any forced size images on featured articles or good articles. Wildhartlivie (talk) 04:47, 7 October 2009 (UTC)

So what's her birthday?

IMDB says November 19. So does a site which styles itself her "offical web site". But a site called starpulse.com say November 20.

I'm inclined to go with IMDB and have restored the Novermber 19 date. But it appears that there may be some disagreement about the matter, unless starpulse.com (whatever it is) has simply made or replicated an error. Herostratus (talk) 17:24, 25 May 2010 (UTC)

Well, IMDb is not considered a reliable source for biographical content and frankly, I have doubts about current websites that call themselves "official web sites". So I went to the horse's mouth: Her autobiography, Self-Portrait gives her birth date as November 20. Most all of the other works listed here agree with that date. Find a grave goes by what is listed on headstones, which can be nortorious for errors, depending on who ordered the stone and that person's knowledge base. I would go with November 20, personally. Celebrities' autobiographies are equally notorious for embellishing the truth. I'm not saying she would have had any particular reason to say 20 November if she knew it was actually 19 November. But after all, while she was indisputably present at her own birth, she was incapable of accurately reporting on it from her own personal recollections. Whatever she says in her book is presumably what she was told by her parents. Parents have been known to get the date wrong. The only really authoritative source is her birth certificate. Hmmmm. Difficult question! [http://themave.com/Tierney/bio/bio2.htm This\ tribute site also says November 20. But searching the web doesn't help much, since sites often just replicate other sites' errors. Well, although her autobiography may be wrong, it seems that it would have to be the most reliable source. Therefore I am restoring the November 20 date. But I wonder where the November 19 date came from? After all even the site that claims to be run by her estate uses that. It would be most interesting to get to the bottom of this. Daria's DOB in error?

Is it possible that someone could check Tierney's daughter, Daria's, DOB from some official source? I have two reasons for asking: dates of birth/death, especially of persons peripheral to the one referenced, have been found to be in error, even on Wikipedia, and I have a strong reason for wondering about this particular birthdate.

Tierney's daughter was born at Ft. Riley (KS) hospital. I was also born at that hospital on December 18, 1943. All my life, my mother would talk about my birth and Tierney's daughter's birth as being on the same day. At the time, my mother was a star-struck 18-year-old and meeting Tierney was the grandest moment in the life of a rather prosaic 1950s housewife.

I realize that none of this is anything more than anecdotal and does not belong in Wikipedia but I cannot help but wonder about the discrepancy. It is, of course, possible that Daria was still in the hospital and that Tierney visited but that isn't what my mother said. She said we were born the same day. I don't know if my mother was present at the time of the Tierney birth but I'm absolutely sure she was present at mine.  :-D

BTW, I've never seen a Tierney film and I always greeted the story with a maximum of eye-rolling but I followed a Wiki link from "The Mirror Cracked" to this page and just can't help wondering. Tredzwater (talk) 14:08, 27 April 2011 (UTC)

Release dates of movies

an editor (124.148.153.248) is disputing the release dates of several of Tierney's movies, e.g. averring that Hudson's Bay was released in 1940 not 1941, Son of Fury in 1941 not 1942, and several similar cases. Other IP editors (whether the same person using different IPs I don't know) are continuing this. I agree that IMBD is not very reliable but it's more reliable than no source. I've long heard second-hand anecdotal evidence that a relative, an Army officer, played bridge for some period of time after WWII with Miss Tierney and her husband, who was military and presumably also an Army officer. It is quite possible that the person relaying the story to me misremembered the original account, and confused Tierney with another actress. (The original source I consider absolutely reliable...if he said it then it's true.). Health Issues / I would like to make some changes for greater accuracy

I am new to editing in Wikipedia (and on-line in general) but have worked as an editor for magazines and book publishing in the past. I have also studied film (BA from Wesleyan University) and have had a lifelong devotion to it and the people who were part of the classic Hollywood studio era.

While reading the section on Health Issues, which is basically an accurate account of her illness, I found in the first paragraph a number of slightly inaccurate details and statements. I would like to correct them based on the reading I've done in "Self Portrait" (the section that is referenced for the text).

I'd like the blessing of editors who have written/contributed to this section to make some of those changes. I can show you the text I plan to use, if that's appropriate.

Birth of Christina 1948

Wiki articles on Gene Tierney and Oleg Cassini suggest that Christina may not have been their child yet in their respective memoirs they give absolutely no hint of this. Surely we should refrain from innuendo and tawdry gossip and take them at their word. Whomever wrote these articles using the same reference regarding Christina's birth should try to counterbalance this obvious false assertion that Christina was illegitimate. Gene Tierney use of the pronoun "we" in the following passage from Self Portrait is a clear reference to her husband Oleg Cassini: "I watched and studied her with joy.
