The Gene Tools page was established to provide a link to the manufacturer of Morpholino oligos. This was done at the request of an editor of the Wikipedia:Chemical sources page. His comments are below.

Hi Jon, I see you are a frequent editor of Morpholino, looks good (it is absolutely not my field, but I understand what the company is doing). But I wanted to say something about the links to gene-tools and AVI BioPharma. The reason a page like Wikipedia:Chemical sources exists, is mainly to be able to remove ALL external links to companies sites (more specifically at the moment, I only leave deeplinks to property-pages on company sites, I remove links to homepages). A nice second option that that page give, is that one should be able to find MSDS, spectra, etc. on the same page (if at a certain moment we could make the links from CAS numbers, INCHI etc., but that is another problem).

Having said that, morpholino is not a single compound, it is a group of specifically targeted compounds, it is not associated with one compound-number, for that reason, the ChemicalSources template is indeed not in its place, and indeed should be removed (I have gone through more than 2300 chemical substances, I may have made some mistakes in placing the tag on some of the pages). But, I do believe that links to the companies should be removed from the morpholino site (all of them), the way they are now presented makes them commercial links (I know there are more pages out there that have such links, I probably would make a similar point to those pages when I encounter them). What would be a good way to circumvent things, is write pages about each of the two companies (e.g. like Dow Chemical Company), and put a link to the company homepage (and maybe some similar links) in a section at the bottom.

Hi Dirk,

I set up a Gene Tools page and make the links live to that new page and the existing AVI Biopharma page. That seems a good solution.

Hi, the above seems like a good argument for the article's inclusion, but since you seem to work for the company, can you please read this and perhaps think about interesting an outside editor in the article? I'm don't think I'm qualified as I don't edit scientific articles. I ran across this while editing articles about Oregon and originally tagged it prod because of what I perceived as NPOV problems and it was uncontested. I'm OK with it being a stub if it can be cleaned up. I'm not sure we need such an extensive list of publications that is longer than the article (and is the part that really smacks of self-promotion). Also please introduce appropriate categories. I wasn't sure what was appropriate to include in this page -- links to the scientific literature seemed appropriate but if you feel that is self-promotion, I'm very amenable to removing the links. I don't really feel the need to post a Gene Tools page at all, but Dirk Beestra wants a path to information on the chemicals from the Morpholino page without putting a direct link to Gene Tools there. There is really no reason this needs to be more than a stub with an outside link. JonMoulton 19:50, 21 August 2006 (UTC)

Hi Jon, I finished tidying up the article and I think it is good the way it is now, though if there are any more scientific articles that can be written and/or linked to (delivery reagent?) that would be even better. Maybe there are some more categories it can be added to as well (anything having to do with genetics, scientific companies, etc.). I'm still not sure what an oligo is, but that's not your fault. :) Thanks for replying. I tend to come down hard on any article that looks at all like an ad, but it seems to me you are acting in good faith and did not intend to spam about the company. Thanks and happy editing! Hi Katr67, I added a few links related to the history of Jim Summerton's antisense development efforts and a link to a paper describing the delivery reagent mentioned in the article. I think it will be tricky to find an outside editor for the Morpholino and Gene Tools pages -- most users are working within a certain system, such as zebrafish or human cell culture, and I hoped the Morpholino page would provide a broader view of the uses of Morpholinos. I expect if someone starts working on the pages who has experience with the reagents, I'll be delighted to let them carry the editing related to their work. I'll just keep checking the pages and striving to maintain NPOV. JonMoulton 19:12, 22 August 2006 (UTC)

The year 1997 was made a link, while the year 2000 was not made a link. Faced with the inconsistancy, I decided to remove the link from 1997 as that link was not germane to Gene Tools (it is easy to overlink a page, obfuscating significant detail). JonMoulton 19:15, 9 February 2007 (UTC)
