Role of philosophy

edit

Philosophy was intended as thr most important matter of the Itlaian liceo classico. It didn't consist in nationism and in the acquisition of a set of historical informations about the main issues of the history of philosophy, the solution proposed by different authors, their biographies and works. Philosphy was the main resilt of the Italian cultural identity and had the mission to build up and preserve a spiritual and national identity among the new young generations. It was designed as a mental habit (Latin forma mentis) to educate people to the free thinking, but in a way compliant with the Actual idealism and the fascist ideology.

Philosophy and history were unified in an unique secondary school professorship and in a unique university degree. The teaching of philosphy was based on the study of classsical primary sources and on a free debate with the teachers who had full freedom in organizing their didactic method and curriculum. No scholastic manuals nor national mandatory programs were provided for the Italian secondary schools.

Perhaps, the primary sources written by Giovanni Gentile (L'insegnamento della filosofia nei licei (1901), Per l'insegnamento della storia della filosofia (1916) and Difesa della filosofia (1921)) are not freely available in the web. Their list was provided by this secondary academic source and its related compendium. The citable material seems not to be so wide. Hope it will be increased in order to provide better sources to the current WP article.Theologian81sp (talk) 22:52, 9 May 2021 (UTC)Reply

All of this seems very strange and contradictory. How can a fascist state (_the_ fascist state) give full freedom of education to teachers, abolish any state-defined curriculum, encourage students to use reason and free-thinking and develop a critical spirit and at the same time, as you say, preserve a spiritual and national identity among them? The latter is what I recognize as a probable goal of education in a fascist state, not the former. Unless of course you redefine what words like "free" and "critical" mean.
