Where's the book?

The article starts out by saying that Gentle Ben is a book but says hardly anything about what the book is about, and then the rest of the article is about a TV series. The article should talk about the book, with something about the plot, and that it takes place in Alaska. There might also be something about what the author had to say about moving the story to Florida for the TV series. —Anomalocaris (talk) 08:11, 12 April 2012 (UTC)

I completely agree. The article also did not mention the 1967 film Gentle Giant that was based on the book and itself became the basis for the TV series, in which two of the film's stars reprised their roles and they used the same Florida location for the film and the TV show. Fortunately, the film has its own article so I was able to add a link. TheBlinkster (talk) 17:52, 14 May 2015 (UTC)

The TV series has Ben as a black bear. Black bears are indigenous to Florida (and most of North America). It is a different bear species from grizzlies which as you note do not live in Florida. This was likely done not only so the show could be made in Florida but also because there were few or no grizzly bear actors at the time of the series being made (it was believed you couldn't work with them - there were a few grizzly bear actors later) but lots of black bear actors. I did not put that in the article as it would be OR but basically you don't see any shows with grizzlies until the 1970s TheBlinkster (talk) 21:18, 16 January 2016 (UTC)
