From the Embassy

Located at 2020 16th Washington DC. I meet with Fernando, who works at the front desk and spends generous time with walk in visitors. He referred to himself as a "Fang" (one of the predominant "tribes" of some 5-7 main tribes under their flag.) Although he speaks Spanish as the primary language of EG, and english quite well too, he was apologetic for not having learned his true native tribe language, Fang. He was very happy to see the article on Annobon. He thought not many people were aware, nor interested. He liked that it was included.

The idea of a "separatist flag" shown on the Bioko page, raised his eyebrows. The island is the home of Malabo, the capital city of ALL Equatorial Guinea. However, he did theorize that the flag may be a push by one of the islands north/south Bubis tribes. The island of Annobon has a tribe unto itself (pointing at the map with this little island out there all by itself, he suggested wryly, as it was self evident)

Fernando told me he would talk with more friends and associates about more of the cultural information. He just touched on what he felt was a great cultural richness he had previously taken for granted. Like the very colorful, involved, (and complex) marriage traditions. I look forward to speaking with him more over the coming weeks. TTLightningRod 19:19, 16 May 2005 (UTC)Reply
