Why was jamaica colonized?--— Preceding unsigned comment added by 198.234.254.244 (talkcontribs) 13:28, 27 September 2005 (UTC)Reply

See Jamaica and History of Jamaica. When first colonised, the lands were in possession of Columbus's family, and his son his commemorated at Saint Ann's Bay -- Op. Deo 10:02, 19 January 2006 (UTC)Reply

The reference to the "Doctor Breeze" and "Undertaker Breeze" are in fact creations of Ian Fleming, author of the James Bond books. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Jamaican1900 (talkcontribs) 15:20, 5 March 2006 (UTC)Reply

Formation processes for Jamaica

edit

In "Geology and landforms": "Jamaica and the other islands of the Antilles evolved from an arc of ancient volcanoes that rose from the sea millions of years ago."

This volcanic arc explanation more correctly applies to the Lesser Antilles, not the Greater Antilles and Jamaica. This section needs work. If no one else would like to jump in and take care of it, I'll locate the appropriate articles/papers to cite, and get to it as soon as possible.Stefan JCO 14:54, 13 August 2006 (UTC)Reply

coasts

edit

quote: The western coastline contains the island's finest beaches, stretching for more than six-hundred kilometers along a sandbar at Negril.

Not sure what the author's intent was, but there most definately are not 600km of beaches in Negril. Long Bay is 7mi long (~11km). Pazagresiva 00:06, 3 January 2007 (UTC)Reply

Vegetation and Wildlife Section-Suggestions

edit

The section about Jamaica's vegetation and wildlife is off to a great start, however, I believe that its content is relatively underdeveloped and sparse compared to some of the other sections included in the article e.g. "Geology and landforms" and "Climate". It would be great if information was added that discussed the species composition and distributions of modern plant and animal communities on the island, and placed this ecological information in the context of global species richness and endemism, and global and local biodiversity stressors. I also believe that readers would benefit from brief discussions about the ecology of Jamaican protected areas and regions of high conservation importance, such as the Black River Lower Morass, Portland Bight and Hellshire Hills, Cockpit Country and Blue Mountains.
