Rifting in North Island
editI have just read "In Search of New Zealand", Hamish Campbell and Gerard Hutching 2007, and it says the Taupo Volcanic Zone is the result of "back-arc rifting", which has "rotated Northland away from East Cape". I presume the back-arc rifting is what Back-arc basin discusses.
So, while "The East Coast of the North Island is also rotating clockwise, relative to Northland," could be considered consistent with that, it is misleading IMO. Is it accepted that the zone is a back-arc basin, and is it an extension of the Lau basin referred to in the back-arc basin article?
The book's approach leads to an appealing explanation of how the forms of the north half of the North Island arose. A typical volcanic arc forms over the Pacific plate subduction to form Northland, it is rifted away, then the Coromandel and Kaimai ranges are formed, then rifted away. Is this explanation sensible?

editHello fellow Wikipedians,
I have just modified one external link on Geology of New Zealand. Please take a moment to review my edit. If you have any questions, or need the bot to ignore the links, or the page altogether, please visit this simple FaQ for additional information. I made the following changes:
- Added archive http://web.archive.org/web/20080108165713/http://www.geonet.org.nz:80/index.html to http://www.geonet.org.nz/index.html

Major rewrite 2018
editI want to get this page to the same standard as Volcanology of New Zealand and Geography of New Zealand. I plan to add refs and linking information to create a better flow through the article. I do not plan to remove correct information or step on anyone's toes. I have already rearranged sections, rewritten bits and removed repeated information (See Nov 1st for the previous version). (Dushan Jugum (Dushan Jugum (talk) 01:59, 8 November 2018 (UTC))
I am happy with the section order now, but the page will still need a lot of grammar and fact checking (mostly of my changes). My next major plans are to add more palaeontology and to fully digitise the geological map so it can be edited (Dushan Jugum (talk) 09:24, 12 November 2018 (UTC))
