out of context quote
editThe quote about "palliative care ward tourism" is extremely out of context; that was not a criticism of the music at all, but of the _staging_ of one of Haas' operas; it was mostly directed at the set design chosen for a death bed scene. Chosen plot musically relevant
editShirley Apthorp's phrase does not refer merely to the staging, which in this case was just in line with authorial intentions as laid down in the work anyway; rather it refers to the choice of plot the composer made, which in turn matches a certain type of music. Spectral music thrives on certain emotional atmospheres, while it fails entirely with others -- this marks its limits of expression.
