Carlo Buonamici v.s. Giuseppe Buonamici

edit

According to his obituary in the New York Times, the only piano teacher mentioned was Carlo Buonamici; a highly respected piano pedagogue and concert pianist in the Boston area with whom Copeland studied for many years and whom is credited as his principal teacher in his obit. I am wondering if the Buonamici mentioned in this article is an accident, and someone confused the two because I'm pretty certain he never went to Florence to study with Giuseppe Buonamici. It's a little strange that Carlo Buonamici is not even mentioned. See the obit here.4meter4 (talk) 11:47, 18 May 2021 (UTC)Reply

This is a tough one. What exacerbates the issue is that so many of the cited sources are offline, making them difficult to verify. Whichever editor consulted the George Copeland memoirs at the NYPL for this article was probably not mistaken about the information they transcribed. What I wonder is whether Copeland himself touched up his memories in some way. For example, the article itself mentions how Copeland’s recollections of his fateful encounter with Debussy were extensively modified over his life. Then again, it is entirely possible that Copeland did study with Giuseppe Buonamici considering that the obit itself mentions that Copland spent his youth in Italy. He may even have studied with both of the Buonamici! Again, a very difficult problem here. Are there any other sources on Copeland aside from the NYT obituary that mention Carlo Buonamici? —CurryTime7-24 (talk) 16:20, 18 May 2021 (UTC)Reply
Apologies, just saw this. Carlo is an error on NYT’s part - he was a distinguished Boston-based teacher, but his father was a better-known Liszt pupil who attracted many American students. Giuseppe is mentioned by name in all of Copeland’s memoirs and many newspaper items from the period. PianoDude2010 (talk) 06:41, 12 August 2023 (UTC)Reply
“George Copeland in Piano Recital.” Hartford Daily Courant, December 24, 1916, 11.
(An example of a period source that mentions Giuseppe.) PianoDude2010 (talk) 06:50, 12 August 2023 (UTC)Reply
I don't think it is an error. Apparently, the son often sent his students in Boston to study with his father in Italy. It was a pattern.4meter4 (talk) 13:25, 29 June 2024 (UTC)Reply
