Institute.
editI believe the Peabody Institute in Peabody, MA is actually the main Public Library now. Please correct this if this is not the case.
New International Encyclopedia described his donations of 1867.

Freeman of London
editIf George Peabody received honor of "Freeman of London", why is he not listed at the Wikipedia page that includes all honorees of title? Avon Edward Foote, chotank@aol.com.68.35.109.55 (talk) 15:00, 24 June 2016 (UTC)
- I assume the page you are referring to is List of Honorary Freemen of the City of London. As stated there, "The mixed list below contains just some of the names of people who have received the Freedom or Honorary Freedom over the years." In other words, it is not complete, and doesn't pretend to be complete. As the same article also states, "[a]bout 1800 Freemen are admitted each year" – far too many to list in full – though admittedly foreign nationals are a tiny minority. Like most of Wikipedia, the list has been compiled piecemeal, and reflects the interests and biases of individual editors (which tend to focus on modern celebrities rather than historic worthies). There is also a Category:Freemen of the City of London, although that currently only contains 29 names, so is even more select. That said, there is no reason why both lists shouldn't include Peabody, so I will add him. GrindtXX (talk) 19:52, 24 June 2016 (UTC)

Name Pronunciation
editCurrently there’s a transcription given for his name with the following note — “This is the standard pronunciation in Massachusetts (his birthplace), and presumably how Peabody himself pronounced his name. However, in Maryland—location of the Peabody Institute and George Peabody Library—and also in Britain—home of the Peabody Trust--the name is pronounced as spelled, Pea-body /ˈpiːˈbɒdi/ PEE-bah-dee.”
He was born almost 230 years ago. Regional accents and pronunciations change over time so I don’t think we can say that the current MA pronunciation of the name means that he necessarily pronounced it that way. I would propose cutting the phonemic transcription unless we have a source on how he pronounced his name. Currently we're presenting conjecture ("presumably") as fact. 2601:602:9B00:4CB0:E58C:76E8:5148:FB4B (talk) 22:33, 10 July 2023 (UTC)
- I agree. The different pronunciations appear to be unsourced WP:OR, so I've removed it for now. Station1 (talk) 06:20, 12 July 2023 (UTC)
- The name is certainly consistently pronounced as "Pea-body" in the UK but as "Peaberdy" by many Americans (I can't speak for the specific Massachusetts/Maryland divide). This sometimes causes confusion, and would be useful information to include. However, I don't currently have any sources, so must reluctantly accept the deletion.
