Railroad construction
editI am questioning the following statement in the current article: "Having risked most of his wealth to build the CPR, the success of the railroad soon made George Stephen enormously rich."
I do believe other major reasons contributed to George Stephen massive wealth accumulation: - The exploitation of underpaid immigrant workers (so much underpaid that they could not afford to send any money to their families and could never travel back) among which many hundreds died because of horrible working and housing conditions. - The tax-free privileges granted to the company by his contacts at the Canadian government. http://www.vpl.ca/ccg/Railway.html Astator (talk) 03:18, 11 January 2012 (UTC)
In 2006 the Canadian government issued a formal apology to the Chinese population in Canada for their treatment both during and following the construction of the CPR.Astator (talk) 03:34, 11 January 2012 (UTC)
