Why is this individual known as Jerzy IV Wilhelm in Polish and Georg Wilhelm I. in German? Olessi 14:43, 2 February 2007 (UTC)Reply

I cannot find any English references for a "George IV William" with connection to Legnica or Liegnitz, nor for "George William I".[1] [2] This individual seems to be known in English simply as "George William", not "George IV William".

The following are some texts mentioning George William in regards to Liegnitz:

  • A History of Germany, 1715-1815 (1908) [3]
  • The Encyclopædia Britannica (1910) [4]
  • The Letterbook of Sir George Etherege (1928) [5]
  • Austria-Hungary: Foreign Policy of Austria-Hungary (1920) [6]
  • The Cambridge Modern History (1908) [7]
  • Austrian Silesia (1920) [8]
  • The New American Cyclopaedia: A Popular Dictionary of General Knowledge (1862) [9]
  • Frederick I: The Man and His Times (1984) [10]
  • The Biographical Dictionary of the Society for the Diffusion of Useful Knowledge (1842) [11]
  • History of Prussia (1883) [12]
  • Letters on Silesia (1804) [13] (written by John Quincy Adams, interestingly enough)
  • History of the German People from the First Authentic Annals to the Present Time (1916) [14]
  • Memoirs of the House of Brandenburg (1849) [15]
  • History of the Prussian Monarchy (1847) [16]
  • Chronology of the Expanding World, 1492 to 1762 (1969) [17]
  • The New monthly magazine and universal register (1849) [18]
  • Peace Handbooks (1920) [19]

These books mention George William (or Jerzy Wilhelm) in regards to Legnica:

  • Tysiąc lat monety polskiej (1963) [20]
  • 300 [i.e. Trzysta] miast wrocilo do Polski: informator historyczny, 960-1960 (1960) [21]

These books also mention Jerzy Wilhelm:

  • Austrian History Yearbook (1965) [22]
  • Acta Poloniae historica (1958) [23]

These books mention George William in regard to the Piasts:

  • Encyclopedia of the Middle Ages (2000) [24]
  • Biographical Dictionary of Medallists (1907) [25]

English language publications using "Georg Wilhelm" include:

  • God's Playground (1982) [26]
  • Baroque Art and Architecture in Central Europe (1965) [27]
  • The Germanic Review (1926) [28]
  • The Court Midwife (2005) [29]
  • The Historiography of the American Catholic Church, 1785-1943 (1944) [30]

The above overview indicates to me that George William is the most common phrasing for this person, although Georg Wilhelm and Jerzy Wilhelm are sometimes used. As per WP:NCNT, the article should be titled "George William, Duke of Foo", rather than "George William of Foo". Whether Legnica or Liegnitz should be used in the title is less clear, although Liegnitz has been used in more English publications than Legnica. Thus, George William, Duke of Liegnitz or George William, Duke of Legnica are better titles for this article. Olessi (talk) 05:31, 7 January 2008 (UTC)Reply
