RfC: Japanese title

edit

The Japanese title here uses "-GHOST IN THE SHELL-" despite official site's news, introduction and several links simply having "Kokaku Kidotai ARISE" not only that but the reliable sources here also have it without the english title. Ryulong believes it should be there for the html code of the official site and html title when you look for it on google.Lucia Black (talk) 21:54, 13 April 2013 (UTC)Reply

Song titles retranslated

edit

I don't know if the English translations of the song titles were pulled from an official soundtrack or translated by a fellow wikipedia volunteer; but they did not reflect the meaning of their original Japanese.

For example, "Jibun ga Inai" does not translate to "Not Being There" in content or context.

  • "Jibun" (じぶん, "(my)self / me"; (reflexive) personal pronoun, first person unless preceded by another pronoun)
  • "ga" (, "(is)"; linker placing focus on the previous item in a sentence (no English equivalent))
  • "Inai" (いない, "(there) is not"; negative conjugation of "iru" (いる, "(there) [be]"; especially for sentients))

"SELF is not" is the most direct translation. To render that into something that both makes sense in English and conveys the originally intended meaning: "There is no me".

  • "SELF is not" -> "(MY)SELF is not" -> "(MY)SELF (there) is not" -> "(There) is not (my)self -> (There) is [no] (my)self -> (There) is [no] [me].

Rather than "not (physically) existing" or "not being in a certain place" as implied by "Not Being There"; "There is no me" retains more of the intended meaning of "Jibun ga Inai" which is closer to "my own identity does not exist". This also fits thematically with the particular episode of Arise and Ghost in the Shell as a whole.

If the previous translations were pulled from an official soundtrack's description, and therefore canonized, then my changes should be kept as notes alongside the official English title ie:
