Talk:Gingival recession

Name of article

edit

This is a good article to have since there could be a lot of information placed here. The name of the article should be the proper name: gingival recession. An alternative name could be something like "recession (gingiva)". Either way, the name should change. - Dozenist talk 20:56, 9 January 2007 (UTC)Reply

It should also be mentioned in this article that using tooth whitening products or methods results in receding gums. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 124.107.161.204 (talk) 08:39, 12 April 2009 (UTC) The assertion that sensitivity to sodium laurel sulfate may cause gum rescission seems far fetched and needs support. At what levels is it typically present in tooth paste? How much can be expected to remain in the mouth after rinsing? By what mechanism could it cause gum tissue to recede? Why single out this ingredient over the 100s that must be used in tooth paste formulations? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 68.163.65.236 (talk) 19:27, 31 October 2009 (UTC)Reply

The reference did not support the statement about SLS so I removed it entirely. SLS is bad for some persons as it may cause or worsen mouth ulcers (see: aphthous stomatitis), or if they are allergic to it (allergic contact stomatitis, plasma cell gingivitis... etc), but I have never heard of it causing gingival recession.
