A dogie is a calf without its mother, but not necessarily an orphan. Usually, in trail herds, yearling calves were included in the drive but their mothers were left behind with the home herd so they could have another calf. Dogies are incessantly importunate because they are being weaned. They will try to suckle on anything, and they complain constantly to the point of being funny and then tiresome and annoying. This info is in various dictionaries and paper encyclopedias. Halfelven (talk) 13:38, 25 August 2020 (UTC)
