Suffix to name

edit

She's CBE, but does she also use "MP"? If so, in what order of precedence are the two suffixes? —SWalkerTTU 07:00, 10 January 2006 (UTC)Reply

Thatcher Speech reference?

edit

Should a sentence be added to the "Career in Politics" section about Ms. Jackson's recent speech completely eviscerating Margaret Thatcher and Thatcherism? It can be found here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XDtClJYJBj8 Liberal92 (talk) 19:05, 11 April 2013 (UTC)Reply

Absolutely. The video now has over half a million views, it's obviously quite popular for a backbench MP speech. A sentence or two should be added. 86.169.108.171 (talk) 23:53, 11 April 2013 (UTC)Reply

Recent photograph?

edit

Why is there a 50-year old publicity-type photograph, rather than a recent one? This promotes a 'woman-as-object' view of women as eye-candy. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 86.190.224.47 (talkcontribs) 23:01, 5 April 2021 (UTC)Reply

It is a common practice on Wikipedia to use images from a person's peak career years, particularly for those who have spent a significant amount of time in the public eye. Moreover, the usage of such a photograph falls within Wikipedia's guidelines for the use of images. ‑‑Neveselbert (talk · contribs · email) 20:17, 16 June 2023 (UTC)Reply

List of credits

edit

There is a very extensive list of Ms Jackson's theatre, film, radio and television credits in the biography of her by Chris Bryant (which was published in 1999, so covers the early part of her career). The film credits here seem to be complete, but the others are lacking. Perhaps someone else might care to add them to this article? I could have a go myself, or scan the book pages. And should her list of theatre credits cover every single role she undertook in repertory? The Filmography section might end up being too long. The Bryant biography doesn't list the characters Jackson played though. @The One I Left:, as you did such a good job in creating List of awards and nominations received by Glenda Jackson, maybe it’s worth starting a Filmography article to accommodate her full list of credits? I’d try to improve it - I updated the awards article based on the biography list.—TrottieTrue (talk) 00:49, 26 July 2022 (UTC)Reply

FYI, I decided to create this article myself, so it does exist: List of Glenda Jackson performances.—TrottieTrue (talk) 00:41, 16 June 2023 (UTC)Reply

Parents’ occupations

edit

Her father Harry was a builder, while her mother Joan (née Pearce) worked on the local supermarket checkout,” A supermarket checkout in 1930s Wirral? I think not, the first supermarkets in the UK opened in the late 1950s. — Arwel Parry (talk) 10:43, 15 June 2023 (UTC)Reply

I agree. "Worked in a shop" might be acceptable, given that sources are cited Billsmith60 (talk) 13:03, 15 June 2023 (UTC)Reply

A Bluecoat at Butlin's?

edit

Section: Acting career, 1957–1968: Early career. 2nd paragraph: "She also worked as a Bluecoat at Butlin's Pwllheli holiday resort on the Llŷn Peninsula in North West Wales, where her new husband and fellow actor Roy Hodges was a Redcoat." I can find no record of Bluecoats at Butlin's, only Redcoats. Bluecoats were the Pontin's holiday camp equivalent of Butlin's Redcoats. https://www.spectator.co.uk/article/bring-back-the-great-british-holiday-camp/ Can anyone cite evidence of Bluecoats at Butlin's camps 1958 - 1961 (re preceding sentence in article)? Robert P Connolly (talk) 13:36, 15 June 2023 (UTC)Reply

I struggled to verify that when I was adding it to the article. The source is cited, but I’m not sure exactly what her role was, since it’s unclear that it existed? Sounds like she did work at Butlin’s, but doing what? TrottieTrue (talk) 00:40, 16 June 2023 (UTC)Reply
She should probably be added to the list of famous ex-staff https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Holiday_camp#Frontline_staff though I thought bluecoats were Pontin's staff and not Butlin's. Guillaime (talk) 23:48, 16 June 2023 (UTC)Reply

Butlin's had redcoats, Pontin's had bluecoats. I can't offer a definitive reference, but I think it would be impossible to find one that supported the idea that Glenda Jackson (or anyone) was a bluecoat at Butlin's. Snugglepuss (talk) 12:55, 15 April 2024 (UTC)Reply

introduction

edit

I'm not all that familiar with British protocol for forms of address, but should she be listed as "The Honourable Glenda May Jackson, MP CBE"? 104.128.161.15 (talk) 16:23, 15 June 2023 (UTC)Reply

'The Honourable' is a form of address for part of the British aristocracy and Privy Councillors (The Right Hon.). In parliament, one hears "The Right Hon. Lady/Gentleman" or "The Honourable member for X". Hence, it is not relevant to Glenda Jackson Billsmith60 (talk) 17:18, 15 June 2023 (UTC)Reply
Further, the post nominal "MP" only ever applies to sitting politicians. She retired from the House of Commons, so ceased to be MP. -- Jack of Oz [pleasantries] 01:19, 16 June 2023 (UTC)Reply

Article subheading

edit

I saw this article come up as most read today, 16 June, and her heading on the link is "English suspicious woman and actor", but in the article, reads "politician and author", apologies if I'm missing something but is this not normal? 86.19.86.233 (talk) 15:44, 16 June 2023 (UTC)Reply

Split the 'acting career' section in two?

edit

I feel like it makes sense to have the sections as 'acting career' (i.e. up to 1991); then political career; then 'return to acting' (i.e. from 2015 onwards). That way the article is in roughly chronological order. I find it jarring to have her first and second acting stints in the same section, then her time as an MP afterwards. I don't know how to make the change and I don't know what other people think. Thecolonpagesaretoocomplicated (talk) 14:22, 21 July 2024 (UTC)Reply
