confusing

"once the shot is taken, the period will be over" I think they mean: once the shot is taken the period is not over until the completion of the shot. "FIBA rules allow a defender to block any shot that is over the rim and the ball is on its upward flight." should be: ...over the rim when the ball... Chris2crawford (talk) 00:51, 8 March 2020 (UTC)

I just revised the page to properly distinguish goaltending from basket interference, with which it is often confused. In doing so, I cited NCAA but not NBA or other professional rules. If someone would care also to investigate professional rules to confirm similarities and differences, that would improve the article. Jbening (talk) 20:06, 30 March 2008 (UTC)

From the NCAA basketball rule book:

Section 34. Goaltending

Art. 1. Goaltending shall have occurred when a player touches the ball during a field-goal try and each of the following conditions is met:

a. The ball is in its downward flight; and

b. The entire ball is above the level of the ring and has the possibility, while in flight, of entering the basket and is not touching the cylinder.

Art. 2. It is goaltending to touch the ball outside the cylinder during a free throw, regardless of whether the free throw is on its upward or downward flight.

Art. 3. When the entire ball is above the level of the ring during a field-goal try and contacts the backboard, it is considered to be on its downward flight. In such a case, it is goaltending when that ball is touched by a player.

I read article 3 to say that, like in the NBA, it is goaltending after the ball has touched the backboard. Am I reading this wrong? Jbening (talk) 22:26, 22 May 2008 (UTC)

Confusion between goaltending and basket interference

But there is still confusion between goaltending and basket interference, in both articles (Goaltending and Basket interference).

But they both cite " NBA Official Rules (2009-2010) Rule 11, Section I" http://i.cdn.turner.com/nba/nba/.element/pdf/2.0/sect/officiating/Official_NBA_Rule_Rook_09-10.pdf as source , rule 11 is named "RULE NO. 11—BASKET INTERFERENCE—GOALTENDING". no differences between goaltending and basket interference is stated, even more "goaltending" and "basket interference" are not even used in rule text (beside the rule title itslelf), so one can not say what is about "goaltending" and what about "basket interference" (or even if they were the same at all).

Furthermore confusing, Goaltending article tell about basket interference, and not just an allusion.

Yes, but the NCAA rulebook does clearly distinguishing between goaltending and basket interference, defining each in essentially the same terms in which they are defined in the Wikipedia articles. And nothing in the NBA rulebook contradicts the understanding of those fouls expressed in the two Wikipedia article and in the NCAA rulebook. Jbening (talk) 23:12, 29 February 2016 (UTC)
