Largest gold bar
editAre the measurements correct? A bar of (pure) gold of this size would weight about 336 kg. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 82.73.191.46 (talk) 12:43, 25 February 2010 (UTC)
If you look at the bar, you will see it is pyramidal in shape.
From this website, we can see that more complete dimensions are given: http://www.techjapan.com/Article997.html
The upper base is 38 x 16 cm. The volume of truncated cone or pyramid, using areas of upper and lower bases is:
V = (1/3)*H*(B1 + B2 + sqrt(B1*B2))
Using the formula above, the truncated pyramid volume is 13717 cm³.
13717 cm³ x 19.32 g/cm³ = 265 012 g ~ 265 kg.
I have not accounted for the fillets on all corners, but they show in the photograph and may be on the order of 1 cm radii. I believe they would account for 15 kg difference. The pyramidal shape accounted for most of it.
I hope this helps.

- But there is volume (17 liters) stated in article. Ciacho5 (talk) 20:37, 26 May 2011 (UTC)
Cost
editWhy is the cost of one kilogram the same as one tonne? prob a typo error somewhere —Preceding unsigned comment added by 217.35.93.92 (talk) 16:48, 13 September 2007 (UTC)
I say keep 'em separated. But have links from and to either entry. --The Gnome 11:40, 24 January 2006 (UTC)
- Agreed, keep separate, one is about the chemical element, the other is a trade good. Nicholas 14:47, 24 January 2006 (UTC)
In the gold article, any reference to it as an investment should be kept brief, and merely refer the user to the article gold as an investment. As for the article on gold bar, I really think it should be kept and expanded. I would like to see much more information on all the gold bars which exist, weights, sizes, countries of use, manufacture, and the uses to which bars may be put, - Central Bank gold, investment gold, trading gold, manufacturing gold, jewellery gold, momento gold etc. Watercolour 15:31, 28 January 2006 (UTC)
Minters
editCan someone add a list of significant minters around the world? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 98.204.240.195 (talk) 13:20, 21 October 2008 (UTC)
Weight of a gold bar?
editWhat is the standard weight of a gold bar? A bank near me is currently offering for sale (and displaying in a glass case) gold and silver bars of 1Kg, 100g and smaller sizes. This article implies that the bars in bank vaults are approximately 12.5 Kg. What are the standard sizes? TiffaF (talk) 10:57, 16 January 2009 (UTC)
- About one sentence later the articles describes the "kilobars" which weigh 1 kg and are "used extensively for trading and investment"24.166.111.163 (talk) 23:27, 23 August 2012 (UTC)
Standard bar weights
editThe info on standard bar weight in the "Standard Bar Weights" section wasn't standalone: I clarified the type of ounce used as well as gave weights in more common units. All of this from the introduction, which a reader might not have read if he came directly for the "How much does a standard bar of gold weigh?" question from outside wikipedia.
