Unfortunately, this leaves out many controversies. A lot of "foodie" types think that the square tomato is the abysmal nadir of the worst of traditional plant-breeding, and there was a whole resulting convoluted ten-year-long lawsuit over how UC Davis allegedly used funds intended to benefit family farmers to benefit large agribusiness instead, without the slightest concern for smaller farmers, farm laborers, or consumers (see this article on the UC Davis website).
