The measure of the ship
editIn the section titled "Design", this sentence appears: "Estimates of her weight range between 1,400 tons[3] and 2,750 tons." I am pretty sure that in discussing the size of a ship, the word "ton" refers NOT to weight of the vessel, but to capacity -- volume. There are many types of tonnage applied in comparing ships; for example, a ship's gross tonnage is, if I recall correctly, the volume of the enclosed space within a ship from keel to the top of the gunnels. I was taught that one gross ton is approximately equal to 100 cubic feet. Therefore, the reference to the weight of the Grace Dieu may be improper; perhaps it should be "Estimates of her internal volume range between 1,400 tons and 2,750 tons."
