A Number of Scenes from Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid Were Filmed in Grafton
editI thought I would provide a few more details about the filming in Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid that took place in Grafton. This information came from Katherine Ross who co-starred in the production.
A number of scenes from “Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid” were filmed in Washington County, including, most notably, the famous scene where Paul Newman, playing Butch Cassidy, rides around with Ross on a bicycle to the tune of “Raindrops Keep Fallin’ On My Head.” This scene was filmed in the ghost town of Grafton, just across the Virgin River from Rockville.“I felt for Paul,” Ross says. “It was not a geared bicycle. We’re riding through this orchard and it was bumpy.”Although that scene is now legendary, Ross says it was only a little paragraph in the screenplay that indicated a musical interlude. There was no written dialogue. The director and cinematographer basically just picked out a few locations to shoot, told them which direction to ride and then let Ross and Newman perform naturally.Ross says they used a long lens to shoot the scene so it was almost as if she and Newman were actually riding around Grafton by themselves. In the film, Ross plays Etta Place, who was the girlfriend of the Sundance Kid, portrayed in the film by Robert Redford. Her character lives in a house in Grafton, though all the interior shots were filmed on a soundstage. Still, the actors are shown in a few different scenes with Grafton’s signature schoolhouse and the cliffs of Zion National Park in the background.[1]
