Christopher sentence

edit

You appear to have commented out the section referring to Christopher Maby, Graham's first child. I'm not sure how I can verify this fact other than to say that I am Christopher's mother and felt that it completed the biography to mention that he existed.

The main issue here is that we need to verify the information. If we do, it can certainly go in the article. Unfortunately, we can't just take someone's word for it that they know, especially on such a sensitive topic as this. I'm not really sure what the procedure is for an editor to prove that she has firsthand knowledge, but I'm sure that is some way to go about it. Page number?

edit

I see that you added a reference, but my searches of the text on Google books found a reference to Christopher's birth, but not killing himself. A page number would help me verify the information; otherwise, I'm not sure that it's in there. Croctotheface (talk) 00:37, 25 January 2009 (UTC)Reply

Croctothe face. Are you suggesting that a link to a death certificate is required for your satisfation ? Originally you had been requesting a reference to verify the existence of first child, are there supporting references to verify existance of other children 62.49.20.42 (talk) 13:46, 26 January 2009 (UTC)
I examined the source on Google books and found no reference to the suicide. Admittedly, I could've just missed it, which is why I requested the page number. Sensitive material such as this requires impeccable sourcing. My expectation is that the editor who cited the book has the book handy and can easily provide the page, which I can easily verify on Google and then end the discussion. I think that's a very minor hurdle to add some very weighty content. Croctotheface (talk) 17:47, 26 January 2009 (UTC)Reply
If it helps, just think about what if the sentence in question is not true. It's clearly much more harmful to have such a statement in the article if it is not true than it would be to omit it even if it were. Pursuant to that, I'm going to comment it out again. The price of having it out of the article for some period of time is well worth the benefit of making sure we don't report something of this nature falsely. I could not find anything in the reference that talked about Christopher Maby. A new name 2008 (talk) 12:25, 9 February 2009 (UTC)Reply
I was wrong there is something about Chris Maby in the new reference. The information is written by Julie Maby and proclaims that her son died tragically in 1998. But there is still no confirmation that Chris is Graham's son. The wikipedia article does not mention a Julie at all in it and the new reference does not connect Julie or Chris to Graham. The book, though it does not appear to be a source for the death, does say that Christopher Maby is Graham's son. There could be different people involved, but that seems like a huge stretch. It's not reasonable to be THAT skeptical of the sources. Croctotheface (talk) 21:31, 9 February 2009 (UTC)Reply

Jackson's autobiography refers to "Graham's wife Julie" here: http://books.google.com/books?id=R5XhJZXb0OUC&pg=PA195&lpg=PA195&dq="graham+maby"+wife&source=bl&ots=qSQhTOMpLt&sig=8lz2EMvZfEGjYo_PxssP9oJlKEM&hl=en&ei=VL5tSrPlHaOMtgfeioGJDA&sa=X&oi=book_result&ct=result&resnum=3 If you search the same source on "graham christopher" you'll turn up a hit. The context links Christopher to Graham and his wife. The only wife of Graham mentioned is Julie (search "graham wife"). That's pretty solid, I think. wheatdesign.com (talk) 14:51, 27 July 2009 (UTC)Reply

Need image of Maby that is not a rendering

edit

The current image of Graham Maby is a photo that has been edited using an artistic Photoshop filter, which conceals details and is at least partially an expression of the artist's views rather than reality. It would be much better to have a realistic image of the subject.

If you haven't had the person in your dining room...

edit

In re: 2nd sentence, "Graham was born..."

Writing about a subject with the first/"given" name is inappropriate. One would not write about Albert Einstein, "Albert did his revolutionary work in Switzerland" or William Pitt the Younger, "Bill entered politics while his father, William, was still in the ministry."

It is jarring and presumptuous, as well as shockingly overly familiar, to write about any encyclopedic subject this way. It gives the appearance of a violation of NPOV, even if one does not occur. (Basically, if you, the writer, have not had the subject in your dining room for lunch, it's not appropriate to write about the person by first name. If you, the author, have had the subject over to tea or lunch, and you feel compelled to use the familiar name, it's likely you are writing a memoir, not an encyclopedia entry.) 75.90.98.37 (talk) 14:09, 10 December 2023 (UTC)Reply

More to the point, WP:Manual of Style says to use the last name on subsequent mentions. I've edited the article accordingly. —C.Fred (talk) 14:14, 10 December 2023 (UTC)Reply
