Nationality column
editGiven the fact that the Grammy is an American award, and that all the recipients are US nationals, including Zawinul – why do we need this field at all? Also, Zawinul's Austrian origins and citizenship bear no relevance whatsoever here. Thoughts? Hearfourmewesique (talk) 18:03, 23 November 2011 (UTC)
- This is not the first time this concern has been raised. I would like to note that removing the Nationality column would make the list inconsistent with other Grammy-related lists w/ FL status. I think that IF it is decided that nationalities should not be included, changes should be made across the board. Personally, I think the nationality of the artist is relevant, especially in certain genres such as World music, Latin music, etc., but clearly others disagree. --Another Believer (Talk) 18:08, 23 November 2011 (UTC)
- Clearly, each case is separate. In this case, however, let me repeat my argument:
- All category winners so far have been US nationals.
- The category has been made obsolete this year, therefore no new entries will be added.
- Zawinul's Austrian identity has absolutely zero importance here, since:
- Grammys have nothing to do with the Austrian culture;
- Zawinul only composed a symphony to be played at an Austrian festival in the 1990s, but apart from that his almost 50-year long career had been as an exclusively American artist.
- I'd even take this a step further and say we merge the individual category articles, does that seem like a good idea? Hearfourmewesique (talk) 18:45, 23 November 2011 (UTC)
- I am not suggesting that the Grammy Awards have anything to do with Austrian culture. I simply think nationality can be relevant and can identify trends (see Grammy Award for Best World Music Album or Grammy Award for Best Latin Jazz Album for examples). Merge which articles? I am not sure I understand. --Another Believer (Talk) 20:24, 23 November 2011 (UTC)
- So – just like I initially said – each case is individual; in this particular case the nationality field seems forced, and again – indicating Zawinul's Austrian identity contributes nothing to the table and only confuses the reader. I already suggested removing the Austrian flag.
- As for my other suggestion, we can merge several sub-category articles, such as this one, into broader category articles, such as "List of Grammy Award winners in jazz". Another suggestion would be to create "List of Grammy Award winners by category" and have slash-articles under it, such as "List of Grammy Award winners by category/Jazz". Hearfourmewesique (talk) 02:13, 24 November 2011 (UTC)
- I wish additional contributors could offer their two cents. I think the nationality column is relevant but clearly you disagree. I also dislike the idea of combining award categories. --Another Believer (Talk) 02:50, 24 November 2011 (UTC)
- Again, only for this particular category; I 100% agree that it is very relevant in other categories, like the ones you mentioned earlier (I believe it was World Music and Latin Music). As for combining categories, what's so bad about putting all the jazz subgenres under the same umbrella? Hearfourmewesique (talk) 02:54, 24 November 2011 (UTC)
- Agree with Hearfourmewesique above, furthermore a mention in article body that Zaeinul is the only non-US winner would be appropriate. A table is only needed when there is a multiplicity. Wwwhatsup (talk) 07:47, 18 December 2011 (UTC)
- I am not suggesting that the Grammy Awards have anything to do with Austrian culture. - Clearly, each case is separate. In this case, however, let me repeat my argument:
- Agree with eliminating nationality column from this article but not to merge with the other jazz Grammy categories. These awards are significant enough for separate articles. J04n(talk page) 21:44, 23 December 2011 (UTC)
