Mixed solvents

Potentiometric electrode calibration in water/ethanol water/dioxan mixtures etc. is very important for pharmaceutical applications. Gran plots tend to be more curved. Could be worth an addition section? Petergans (talk) 08:40, 2 April 2008 (UTC)Reply

Changes to 'Electrode Calibration' section.

edit

Peter:

Only now that the Christmas break has arrived am I able to attend to my Wikipedia interests. Your addition of a section on electrode calibration was welcome. However, I find that (a) it introduced new notation, for instance aH, (b) it repeated some elements from other sections, (c) it differed in style, and (d) it made an unabashed plug for GLEE rather than cite literature. As well, and more importantly, there was an earlier section on electrode offset which also has to do with calibration and the new section was located at the end, after the bit on potentiometric data, which made for a poor transition and a noticeable break in flow.

So I re-wrote the section,

  • making sure to include all of the elements you had in your version,
  • using the same notation as elsewhere
  • blending it with the electrode offset part (that heading has since disappeared)
  • moving it ahead of the portion on potentiometrically monitored precipitation titrations
  • citing the primary literature but still inserting the plug for GLEE
  • giving more details of what's computationally involved in electrode calibration; in particular, your version implied that linear least-squares affords the calibration parameters E_0 and s directly from

    which cannot be true.

I've also added in the very first paragraph a mention of electrode calibration as an end use of Gran plots.

I hope you agree that the new version is more encyclopedic and reads more smoothly. Cheers.

Who was Mr/s (Dr?) Gran?

edit

An author listed as "Gran, G." is listed in the bibliography. The reason I got to this article in the first place was to find out wherefore the name Gran was derived. Unfortunately, Wikipedia doesn't seem to have an article on this person. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 76.238.216.196 (talk) 00:51, 28 February 2014 (UTC)Reply
