the artcle do say nothing about measurements. The main question is: what does grawimeter really measure? Of course absolute gravimeter measure gravity field. What about others? There is no good reason to (and lots of good reasons against!) linking words like "relative" and "absolute." Might as well link "mass" or "interference" or "fringe" (wjere they can read about a new TV series). Not at all hopeful and very distracting if someone hopes to see the difference between a relative gravimeter and an absolute gravimeter by clicking on the links. --65.202.227.186 (talk) 19:52, 24 October 2008 (UTC)mjdReply

Dear MJD, Not sure how to use this talk page. I just made a few modications to Gravimeter. I think "absolute" and "relative" convey little. The term "differential measurements", and "gravity gradiometer/gradiometry", "tensor instruments" are much more precise and what will yield the most precise results if you google. That is my current test - if the term googles to a vast array or mostly unorganized and nearly random results, then you should not use it. In preference, use terms that lead to current, active research, or fundamental papers, ideas and concepts which sustain the industry or topic.

MJD, Hello. I don't know you, and don't know how to find you on or off Wikipedia. I do not know the protocol for working with others on Wikipedia. I have some ideas, but I am willing to listen. I won't stay here if you turn into an edit Nazi, there are other places to spend my time and energy. I like Wikipedia and want it to be successful, but it has some pathologies that might only be healed if it is replaced entirely.

I will try to add things to Gravimeter as I can. I have been tracking gravity on the Internet for close to 20 years now. But only recently has the field exploded with new activity and developments. My personal notes are at GravityNotes.Org. I know most of the people mentioned, and have been working with the superconducting gravimeter groups for over a decade. I am not including my own research here, but only indicating the structure and capabilities, and interests of the gravity measurement industry at this time.

I am trying to select some key links to other pages on Wikipedia, and some links to useful papers, most usefully available on the web. So that people who get to this page can most efficiently find what they are looking for. There are not many other resources at this time. They tend to get highly specialized and focus on the application, rather than the instrument itself, its development, currrent research and future directions.

The limits of gravimetry are somewhat linked to the gravitational radiation/gravitational wave groups. I tease them that they are throwing away some of the best gravimeter technologies, and gravimeter data, because they are so focussed on merging black holes, and merging neutron stars at the moment. What their work indicates is that "gravimeters" can be built with current technology out to perhaps 15 orders of magnitude beyond what we have now. The key development areas are multiaxis instruments, arrays of self-calibrating instruments, GHz sampling gravimeters, time of flight gravimeters, and the time dilation instruments. I could fill five books with just the tip of this enormous iceberg. The newer accelerators, and an increasing number of experiments, have to make corrections for the changing gravity at the earth's surface. You don't build a multibillion dollar accelerator without checking the gravity field variations at your location and accounting for them in your design. The ring lasers, radio telescopes, tiltmeters. A verg long and growing list of people, organizations and new methods.

My personal interest is solar system gravimetry an gravimeter-based imaging, but my study of gravity on the web is for the Internet Foundation, and has more to do with research cooperation and development of new fields. Gravity is an emerging field, and so I want to see it as it grows to perhaps help other groups. I am doing this on Wikipedia to see if I can clarify where their system can be improved as an Internet phenomena and methodology.
