Team sport reserves.

edit

Bearing in mind this report should we include the reserves for these specific sports in the totals. Thoughts?

Change from Great Britain to United Kingdom at the 2020 Summer Olympics

edit

This change seems designed to create confusion. In the context of the Olympics the British team (Team GB) is known as Great Britain or Great Britain & Northern Ireland. No one is going to search wikipedia for the UK at the Olympics and as a consequence we are making access to information more difficult. Furthermore why change the name for just the 2020 Olympics? What about all the related pages? Drams707 (talk) 16:22, 9 July 2021 (UTC)Reply

Agreed, this should be moved back to Great Britain... the IOC recognises the nation's name as such. E1tiger (talk) 16:24, 9 July 2021 (UTC)Reply
The article was Great Britain in 2016, in 2012, in 2008 etc etc. What’s so different this year?--Egghead06 (talk) 16:33, 9 July 2021 (UTC)Reply
Moved back as it seemed to be a unilateral move in the first place. Hopefully that's the end of it for now E1tiger (talk) 16:54, 9 July 2021 (UTC)Reply
The team is known as Great Britain, even if it's technically Great Britain and Northern Ireland. It's not known as United Kingdom anywhere. Joseph2302 (talk) 18:13, 9 July 2021 (UTC)Reply
It was me - sorry, and I renamed it, not to cause confusion, but to reduce confusion. I assumed the article title was incorrectly using the term as the nation name rather than as a team name, especially as the team is branded as Team GB, not Great Britain and the nation is called the "United Kingdom" not "Great Britain". That view was reinforced by the leading sentence in the British Olympic Association article which says "The British Olympic Association (BOA) is the National Olympic Committee for the United Kingdom". -- DeFacto (talk). 18:51, 9 July 2021 (UTC)Reply
The WP:COMMONNAME for the team is "Great Britain". In the same way that it's Netherlands at the Olympics, even though it represents the Kingdom of the Netherlands (which includes many other islands. I have never seen the team referred to as the United Kingdom. In fact, as per the parent article (which is well sourced): "While the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and BOA both refer to the team as 'Great Britain' and the team uses the brand name Team GB, the BOA explains that it is a contraction of the full title, the Great Britain and Northern Ireland Olympic Team." United Kingdom would be an inappropriate name to give it, the only alternative would be the fullname "Great Britain and Northern Ireland Olympic Team"- but that is massively cumbersome. Joseph2302 (talk) 19:12, 9 July 2021 (UTC)Reply
Joseph2302, there are two things wrong with that argument. 1, COMMON NAME applies to the whole title, not just a portion of it. To use that argument you'd need to show that "Great Britain at the 2020 Summer Olympics" is the common name used in sources covering the topic covered in this article. 2, "Netherlands" is the common and usual short name used for that sovereign country, where "United Kingdom" is the equivalent for the sovereign country involved here. If we were referring to the sovereign country in the title here, then it would be incorrect, but if we are clearly referring only to the team name then it may well be correct. -- DeFacto (talk). 20:21, 9 July 2021 (UTC)Reply
I don't see how "United Kingdom at the 2020 Summer Olympics" is the WP:COMMONNAME, given that zero sources with that name have been presented. Whereas Great Britain or TeamGB (the short form of that name) is used in e.g. British Athletics, BBC, Sky, and that's just on a 30 second search. Joseph2302 (talk) 09:17, 10 July 2021 (UTC)Reply
Joseph2302, have you read the rest of this discussion? I don't think anyone said "United Kingdom at the 2020 Summer Olympics" was the common name. And I think the problem has been solved now by the change to the first sentence to match the current article title. When I read the article as it was before, it seemed to be saying that the BOA represented Great Britain, which is clearly ridiculous because it represents the whole of the UK. Now it more correctly says Great Britain is the team name and not the nation name, so all is well. -- DeFacto (talk). 18:32, 10 July 2021 (UTC)Reply

Footballer caps

edit

For the number of caps the footballers have, is it only counting the under-23 caps i.e. matches they've played for the Olympics team previously? Because apart from the numbers being unsourced, they don't match the senior country cap numbers for players. If it is under-23 caps only, this should be clearly stated, as it's totally ambiguous, especially when unsourced (so there's no reference source to look at to understand the numbers better). Missing sports

edit

Why is there not sections for Basketball, Beach volleyball, Handball, Volleyball and Water polo with a link to qualifiers and a paragraph on how we did, even though we did not qualify we did try.

Ignore, section at end mentions non-contested sports.

But have added all the missing sports to the competitors table to show we did not send anyone. At least the. The table is a complete picture.
