Population figures

edit

These seem to be largely ad hoc and unverified. Sometimes they are just plain inaccurate. The Ballincollig figure is given as 20,000, while according to the Ballincollig article, it is 16,308.

There also seems no logic behind the grouping. Why is Ballincollig in the Metro Cork figures, while Blarney is included in Cork City. Blarney is several kilometres away across open country, while you could walk from Cork City Centre to Ballincollig without ever leaving a built up area. And why are Passage West and Monkstown, which have their own town council, included in the city? Is there any document that can support using these groupings?195.73.119.90 (talk) 15:32, 16 February 2009 (UTC)Reply

Merge proposal

edit

Because "Greater Cork" and "Metropolitan Cork" are defined by the same statutory instruments, deal with also exactly the same issues (planning, transport, etc), and because there is considerable redundancy between the two existing articles, they should probably be merged. Beyond this, both terms are not used ANYWHERE outside CASP. Either these two should be merged under "Greater Cork" (as the super set), or a "Cork extra-urban areas" article, or -possibly- under a "CASP" article! Thoughts? Completely agree with the proposal to merge. There is too much overlap. Metropolitan Cork is used outside the CASP. It was used in supporting documentation for the 2002 census, but not the census itself. The CSO said it was going to be put into the 2006 census as an entity in its own right, but that never happenedIrlchrism (talk) 09:34, 24 January 2008 (UTC)Reply
The phrase "Cork Metropolitan Area " is used by the Cork Chamber of Commerce. The Irish census figures only refer to a narrowly defined central urban core whereas the " metro" area far better reflects the reality of modern Cork City. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Dunquin (talkcontribs) 17:46, 12 May 2008 (UTC)Reply

Refreshing the merge/cull discussion.

edit

Recent edits to this article reinforce to me that the Greater Cork concept is ill-defined as an entity separate from the Metro area - and therefore open to too much "original research" and random "guesstimates" on its boundaries, sub-divisions and population subsets. Further, this article is (in its current form) of very limited value. It is made up of random and indiscriminate population figures (which are of dubious accuracy), bus routes (which appear quite random in aspect and seem to deal with Metropolitan routes anyway), and an "economy" section which - frankly - is too weak and vague to be of any value. (The only VER facts in it seem to deal with the GDP contribution of the Cork/Kerry region - a region vastly different from this article's titular subject. And which is already dealt with in the Economy of Cork article and economy section of the County Cork article.) So, I am back again to whether this article has ANY verifiable or valuable content, that is not already found in (or cannot be reasonably merged into) the Metropolitan Cork article. Per the notes above, it seems that there is consensus for a merge. So, unless anyone else has other ideas on how to resolve the issues with this article (or sees or can reasonably explain the value of having two articles) I'm gonna push forward with the merge.
