Jersey

edit

The jersey now depicted on this page isn't the final design. According to the website, there is a currently active ballot on the jersey that will be adopted. I'd suggest removing the jersey until an announcement has been made, or display both jerseys with a note "final decision pending". Comes.amanuensis (talk) 13:49, 16 November 2010 (UTC) Okay, will do! Guernsey has been decided on and it's the one with the white G on it, edited the page so that only the official guernsey is shown. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Bombrars (talkcontribs) 23:39, 26 March 2011 (UTC)Reply

Official 2012 playing guernsey

edit

GWS have released stock images of their 2012 playing guernsey for which they will use in the 2012 AFL Premiership Season, have uploaded and set to their "jumper section" — Preceding unsigned comment added by Bombrars (talkcontribs) 06:31, 27 October 2011 (UTC)Reply

Should the club's area of representation be called GREATER Western Sydney

edit

There's been a little edit war underway in the article over whether we should say "Representing the Western Sydney area..." or "Representing the Greater Western Sydney area..." As a non-Sydneyite, I was concerned, perhaps like those reverting, that "Greater Western Sydney" was purely a marketing term invented by the AFL, but no. A Google search shows me that many very diverse organisations refer to the region in just that way, including the Education Department, the Cancer Council, National Bank, University of Western Sydney, Scouts, and even Wikipedia itself. So the AFL didn't invent it. It's very well established. I reckon inclusion of "Greater" in the area represented is justified. HiLo48 (talk) 07:56, 12 May 2012 (UTC)Reply

Club name.

edit

I couldn't find Greater Western Sydney Football Club as a registered name with Australian Securities and Investments Commission, I only found Greater Western Sydney [1]. Could someone please clarify the clubs name with a reference for the official name.--2nyte (talk) 03:10, 1 November 2013 (UTC)Reply

According to this document, they (or rather it) is officially "Western Sydney Football Club Limited" ACN 130190242. It's a company limited by guarantee, not by shares as almost all other companies are. Basically, the GWS accountancy people spent maybe a day carefully filling out the paperwork and ASIC online forms to start a legal entity called "Western Sydney Football Club Limited". They then went on with the business of running what everyone calls the Greater Western Sydney Football Club or GWS Giants (despite the fact that the company at the centre of the business structure is actually called "Western Sydney Football Club Limited").--Shirt58 (talk) 02:06, 2 November 2013 (UTC)Reply
Oops. The name "Western Sydney Football Club Limited" was actually registered by the AFL in early 2008, which is mentioned in the article. (I should have known that, since I put it there.) Here is a list of the "corporate personalities" of the AFL clubs, and no, Eddie isn't on the list: he's a "natural person". No seriously, I'm not making this stuff up.--Shirt58 (talk) 03:31, 2 November 2013 (UTC)Reply
"GWS Giants" is the trading name of the "Western Sydney Football Club Limited" according to the ASIC website - it means that the title of the page is neither the official or the common name. Hack (talk) 15:43, 7 November 2013 (UTC)Reply
So shouldn't the article be changed to reflect this?--2nyte (talk) 03:34, 8 November 2013 (UTC)Reply
I would suggest "Greater Western Sydney Giants" is the most appropriate title. Hack (talk) 05:18, 8 November 2013 (UTC)Reply
My first thought was that the name needed to be consistent with other AFL clubs. Trouble is, they're not consistent themselves. The older, pre-AFL clubs have names such as Geelong Football Club and Hawthorn Football Club, but a couple of the newer clubs, West Coast Eagles and Sydney Swans, don't fit that pattern at all. Hack's suggestion fits the pattern of those newer clubs I just named. It's a good suggestion. HiLo48 (talk) 05:28, 8 November 2013 (UTC)Reply
Agree and support change to "Greater Western Sydney Giants", as per HiLo48; fits with current AFL club name format.--2nyte (talk) 06:52, 8 November 2013 (UTC)Reply
Support change to "Greater Western Sydney Giants" per Hack, HiLo48 and 2nyte. --Shirt58 (talk) 10:23, 8 November 2013 (UTC)Reply

Greater Western Sydney Football ClubGreater Western Sydney Giants – The club is officially the "Western Sydney Football Club" and trades as the "GWS Giants". The club in official communications generally refers to itself as the "Greater Western Sydney Giants" with coverage in reliable sources referring to the team as either "GWS Giants", "Greater Western Sydney Giants" or some form of contraction of either (eg GWS, Greater Western Sydney or Giants) Hack (talk) 06:57, 8 November 2013 (UTC)Reply

support as a recently created entity, they basically get to choose whatever name they want as a trading name and GWS Giants is the commonly used name. However this in no way does this change suggest that any other team's page name should change style.The-Pope (talk) 13:22, 8 November 2013 (UTC)Reply
Yes, this IS a new entity. Does it really have an established common name yet? I cannot recall the expression GWS Giants used much at all. Just "GWS" might be more common. Where would we look for examples and evidence? And we don't use common names for other AFL clubs anyway. Nobody say they barrack for Collingwood Football Club. They just say "Collingwood", (If they're that silly.   ) I don't think we have a policy on naming AFL clubs. HiLo48 (talk) 21:24, 8 November 2013 (UTC)Reply
I get 1.5 million ghits for "Greater Western Sydney Giants" vs 300k for "GWS Giants" and 155k for "Greater Western Sydney Football Club" and 100k for "Greater Western Sydney Giants Football Club". The current name was derived way back when they were created, and basically had to guess what the common name would be, based on the official names, which almost never gets used. Interesting to see some of the club's own brochures, such as this one use "Giants" almost exclusively, "Greater Western Sydney" is not mentioned at all, "GWS" is only mentioned a few times. But marketing people try to drive the branding, not necessarily reflecting the common use. The point of comparison is that most of the older clubs actively discourage the use of the "name nickname" style - ie "Collingwood Magpies" is not commonly used by those associated with the club or league, mainly by those used to the American style of sports teams naming. Use of Geelong Cats and Fremantle Dockers has increased recently, due to the club marketing people pushing that for various reasons, but they both have significant use of the Foo Football Club too. In the end it doesn't really matter, as long as we pick a highly used term, not neccessarily the official one, and have plenty of redirects from the alternatives. I stand by my comment of move this one, but none of the other AFL clubs. The-Pope (talk) 02:26, 9 November 2013 (UTC)Reply
You want to count Google hits? I just got 10 million hits for "GWS"! You probably know that the "Geelong Cats" marketing thing began around five years ago when "GFC" came to mean "Global Financial Crisis". They wanted to avoid any negative associations. My impression is that it had virtually no impact on fans, and has now faded away. So, do we go with "GWS"? I'm only partly joking. Americans on Wikipedia insist that "US" is an encyclopaedic name for their country. HiLo48 (talk) 02:38, 9 November 2013 (UTC)Reply
We know that we have to temper the common name usage to reflect a "common name when not automatically talking footy" We all know what someone means when they say "I saw Carlton play the other day". We know they mean the football club, not the suburb running around. But we also know that in a non-specific football sense, you can't just use Carlton, but we take into account common use by the existance and extensive use of the {{AFL Car}} style shortcut templates. So it's not worth even considering a name without some form of nickname or football club qualifier. In this case, nickname wins over FC, as it does with Bris, Syd, WC & WB. Freo and Geelong (and Adelaide/Gold Coast?) might one day, but not yet. The others are fairly adamant that they don't like the name-nickname construct of their name. The-Pope (talk) 02:55, 9 November 2013 (UTC)Reply
Is there a particular reason why Aussie Rules clubs use "Football Club" rather than "F. C." as we see on all English football clubs pages? Gibbsyspin 06:39, 14 November 2013 (UTC)Reply
You could ask that question the other way round, why use an acronym ahead of the words? You'll generally only find FC used for Australian football clubs when it's used as a complete acronym: SFFC, CFC, EPFC etc, not just as a suffix to the full town name. Just traditional, I guess. Can this discussion be closed now, it seems consensus has been reached for the initial proposal.--2nyte (talk) 02:36, 18 November 2013 (UTC)Reply

Capitalising the word GIANTS

edit

I’ve noticed that the club advertises themselves as the “Greater Western Sydney GIANTS” and they call the stadium “GIANTS Stadium” so I was thinking that we should change it on their respective Wikipedia pages. This, I believe, would be more factually correct. WDM10 (talk) 18:54, 3 December 2019 (UTC)Reply

This is an interesting observation from WDM10. The club certainly does call itself GIANTS, in all Caps, quite consistently. Google Maps shows their ground as GIANTS Stadium. The AFL website is inconsistent, with the all-caps version in some places, but not in others. Examples of exceptions are at [2] and [3]. The Age newspaper uses mixed case, e.g. [4]. No idea what NewsCorp papers do because I'm not giving Rupert Murdoch any of my money to get past his paywalls. HiLo48 (talk) 23:25, 3 December 2019 (UTC)Reply

Never Surrender Jumper

edit

Can someone update the uniforms section in the infobox as the giants have released a new clash jumper for matches against Sydney. WIKI Wizard of Wales (talk) 08:00, 13 April 2021 (UTC)Reply

Where is the best and fairest? Try and find it, it's easier than me explaining. It has all the records for rising star and shit no one cares about then it says go to season summaries for B&F. Under season summaries, there's zip. When you click the link, zip. Where on wikipedia is the information regarding each year's GWS Giants B&F? Pls advise or fix
