Tourism?

edit

This article sounded like something out of a tourism brochure, so I removed the bulk of what seemed non-encylopedic and put it here. Feel free to re-write it into an encyclopedic tone and put it back in the article if you know more about this area. --Wolf530 00:26, May 20, 2005 (UTC)

The City of Miami was included at the bottom, but I couldn't figure out how to link to the Wikipedia article for Miami, OK...it kept linking to Miami, FL. If someone who knows what they are doing can reinsert Miami, and have it link to the proper article, I would appreciate it.--rhmoore 05:25, 18 February 2006 (UTC)Reply

You can do this with [[Miami, OK|Miami]]. The problem is fixed now. Ash Lux 23:14, 20 May 2006 (UTC)Reply

Whitewater Rafting?

edit

I have lived in Green Country my whole life and have never heard of anyone going whitewater rafting! Are you sure that the whitewater picture shouldn't be listed under Colorado?

Terrillwhite 07:13, 13 September 2006 (UTC)Reply

Oh yes, believe it or not, there's a big whitewater rafting industry in green country. The best is on the illinois river. It's fun, you should go sometime.
Well, believe it or not, I have lived in Tahlequah my whole life. The Illinois River is about 4 miles from my house and I have canoed up and down the river but have never, ever seen anyone white water rafting like the picture shows on this page. T. White 08:55, 13 October 2006 (UTC)Reply
I removed the photo for white water rafting on the Arkansas River. While the river may boast rapids suitable for rafting in other states, it is primarily a navigational route in Oklahoma, connecting to the Mississippi River in Arkansas. Also, the Illinois River in Tahlequah, while a prime location for canoeing, also doesn't serve as a location for whitewater rafting as their are few rapids. My source is merely the fact that I have lived in Oklahoma my whole life. Also, the photo was taken in Colorado and not in Oklahoma. T. White 07:06, 20 October 2006 (UTC)Reply

Alternate Definitions

edit

Hello, Oklahoma folk! I am puzzled by the article's statement that sometimes 'Green Country' refers only to Tulsa and its immediate environs. When I hear Tulsans say Green Country, they're explicitly referring to a region containing rural places like Tahlequah and Muskogee—which are not, of course, in the Tulsa Metropolitan Area. Furthermore, as the article indicates, Green Country is an old term (although the footnoted article doesn't appear to validate that), predating Tulsa's cultural preeminence in northeast Oklahoma. GreenGourd (talk) 01:16, 20 April 2009 (UTC)Reply

I just found the Green Country article today, and I agree with GreenGourd's assessment. I'm in my forties and grew up in Green Country, I am currently living in Green Country (by any of the definitions), and I think the page needs to be changed to reflect the historical definition of Green Country. Reading it now, it seems like what happened is that the Oklahoma Department of Tourism made up their own definition, that does not include the areas that are traditionally referred to as Green Country. In addition, the largest-area alternate definition shown by the map is not discussed by the text at all. That definitely needs to be fixed, especially since that is closest to the definition I remember being the traditional one. I am going to try to find some older references, and then come back and edit the article. Oklahoman (talk) 12:38, 11 November 2020 (UTC)Reply
