Contested Speedy Deletion

edit

Please give me some time to build up this article. The artist is clearly notable anyway as he has performed leading roles with the San Francisco Opera, which is generally considered one of America's best opera companies on par with the Metropolitan Opera. He has also performed on a number of recordings and appeared on PBS's Great Performances. I'm not sure why this was nominated since I created it with a construction tag which clearly indicated expansion was in the works.4meter4 (talk) 21:26, 10 May 2010 (UTC)Reply

Agreed. If he's sung leading roles in San Francisco, that alone should be enough to establish notability. --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 21:34, 10 May 2010 (UTC)Reply

I combed through this article and made citable revisions, grammatical improvements (the American Academy of Vocal Arts versus The American Academy of Vocal Arts). The singer's manager of nearly thirty years, Dorothy Cone, retired, and those files have not been archived. His teacher, Ms. Natalucci, also retired and took down her web site. An opera company may have a full program for the current season, but then not archive the information properly. It becomes challenging for an artist's citations and references to remain current when the nature of the business is always changing. Fortunately, this singer continues to perform and is on the faculty of a university. I found today that some guy came along and completely reverted everything, including grammatical improvements and the usual and customary way a role, the name of the opera and the name of the opera company is written. I feel violated. I need advice.SopranoAscends 04:14, 4 January 2011 (UTC) — Preceding unsigned comment added by SopranoAscends (talkcontribs)

Hi there SopranoAscends. First of all, when starting a new conversation please remember to put in a new section header as I have just done above. Second, please remember to sign your comments by using four ~ marks. In response to your query, I reverted your changes for several reasons (although I agree I should have been more careful to leave the gramatical corrections). First, some of the language you used was unencyclopedic. Wikipedia is not here to promote artists but present information in a neutral way. Please avoid using WP:Peacock terms like "elite". Second, some of your changes altered content so that it varied from the cited material. Wikipedia policy requires that all content be cited to independent reliable sources. Which brings me to my third point, Stapp's personal website or those of his manager or the university he works for is not useable as a source because it is not independent of the subject and should therefore not be cited as a reference. Please see WP:Sources and WP:Verify as to what is considered a useable source. Remember wikipedia is not concerned with what is true but what is verifiably true. Fourth, you removed some useful wiki-links, such as to the Merola Opera Program and to his pupil Stephen Dickson. Finally, please realize that wikipedia is a collaborative encyclopedia and therefore articles are likely to change. Accusing another editor of violating an article by changing it is not helpful to the editing process. I suggest you read WP:OWN. I am happy to work with you in improving this article and would gladly hear any suggestion you have. Thank you for your interest in this article and feel free to ask me any questions. Cheers.4meter4 (talk) 04:53, 4 January 2011 (UTC)Reply
